damn... impressive! Mine were around those numbers (about 10psi lower) at 140k.

Probably no need to do a leak down. But if your bored you might as well check it out. Usually leak down would be done after a low compression reading to find out whats going on... in your case... nothing is going on.

Did you use any type of special adapter for your tester? The tester i have is a basic gauge with a rubber hose and a fitting at the end. Did you have trouble threading it in the spark plug holes? What are the numbers to be looking for for an engine in good shape with the test done with engine warmed up?

Anything over 170 typically is good. 200 is about what you would expect out of a brand new engine after the break in or an engine that has been immaculately maintained. I would bet the OP has a factory freak with those numbers on a 145k+ mile engine.

OP, keep in mind that compression may be 200 today, and 50 tomorrow without warning. Leakdown is always preferred if you have the tools to do it. It only takes a little while to do it right, and its extra peace of mind. Even still, I would probably be going bigger than the frankenturbo with your engine. The slower ramp and less pressure required for a bigger snail will help equalize any deterioration of the piston seals/rings due to age-even if you currently have 200psi of compression.

Also, keep in mind that compression tests are intended to be done with the throttle wide open, which can't be done on a dbw without VAGCOM or dealer software/hardware-so that actually accounts for 10-15psi of compression-still VERY VERY good for an engine of your age. I would also recommend having your oil tested the next 3000 mile oil change. Look up blackstone industries oil analysis on google. they will send you a free test kit. Then it costs 22 dollars to get the analysis done. That is an even better indicator of your engines internal health. I would trust that more than a compression test before doing a turbo upgrade on a 145k+ engine.

jeebus those are good numbers. Mine are like 190, 180, 170, 190 or something like that at 115k miles (20k with BT). I'm getting concerned with cylinder 3, it's a full 20psi lower than it was at 90k miles. Hm.

i was on top of everything with this car since the day i got it. oil changed every 5000 miles along with the plugs. Castrol Syntec 5w-40 or Fuchs. Flushed every 10,000 miles, changed almost every single gasket in the car at 120,000. did the check valve removal with a catch can, all stainless steel braided hoses. sensors, filters, etc. way too much done to this car to list, lol. original turbo driven hard still spiking 11psi holds 9-10 with no issues. the car has been a headache at times but i love Audi.

Now your compression results make sense.

slightly bent rod, clearances from piston/rings to wall off from rubbing, causing small drop in compression.
take your motor apart and prove me right lol. i guarantee that more of the BT cars have some type internal damage than most people think.

I know the possibilities, but I'm not taking it apart unless it drops below 150. I'm in law school, and that just isnt worth the money. If she blows, I'll put in another stock motor for $600. Or maybe if I find a short block for cheap I'll think about building it over the winter, but that is unlikely and I'll probably just keep an eye on the motor. I plan on a 2.0L BAT once I'm out of school and re-employed.

I did not test the rings with the oil in the cylinder test. I did recently have the oil analyzed and it came back with slightly higher than normal fuel contamination, which may also be the result of not being fully warmed up when I drained it, especially b/c the commute to school is under three miles and the car doesn't get fully warm for many days in a row. Who knows it may be a valve leaking too. I wish I owned a leakdown tester...

Depends on which gaskets he's talking about.

OP, any pics of your catch can and/or check valve delete setup?

The easiest way is to create a photobucket account. It's free and you can upload a ton of pics.

I forget to mention that its still has the original head gasket on the motor. I'm tempted to change it but see no reason to unless someone can tell me otherwise?

I just did a Comp test on my son's '02 A4 1.8 @ 160,000. O.G turbo Boost is peaked at 10.5 and settles at 8.5'ish. It goes through about 1qt of oil per 2k miles.

Bosch Plugs all look the same with white residue on each, like a light film of powder. The plugs have 15k on them. Is she going down for the count?

Last I checked at 150K I think i'm all pretty even around 170, burns a little oil, but the turbo makes up for low compression, just force more in!
