AutoX Fun with the local Porsche Club

Here's a few pics and videos from the most recent northwest porsche club event at Bremerton Motorsports Park. I was out there driving the Western WA University formula SAE car and then had a go in the S during the fun runs in the afternoon. Had a great time and was very pleased with how the S did. My fastest time of the day in the Formula car was a 45.8X which was a couple tenths off of the fastest time of the day put down by a fully track prepped 996 GT3 (Motons, straight pipes, 315 hoosiers out back) and my best in the S was a 50.01 and I definitely made a few mistakes. It wasn't easy to transition from the forumla car to my car I'll tell you that much, but anyways I'll let the pics and vids do the talking. Enjoy!

sick dude! next time you guys do the auto-x in town let me know i'd definitly like to come out and take a look at the cars. i have a set of H&R coilovers coming in at SK Motorsports today, i'd like to get out and give my car a good test after i get them in.

how are the brakes since you got them on? thought you were going to spray them Nogaro?

Thanks I'm running Stasis Tracksports with 600/700lb springs, Perrin spherical front sway bar links, 034 density line lower control arms, and CPP adjustable upper control arms allowing me to run 2.9 degrees of camber in the front with a fair amount of caster. I'm pretty happy with the set up but my tires are pretty toast so I'm going to step up to some 255s for next summer and start playing with sway bars to get it a little more dialed in.

Oh nice I'm interested to see how you like those, the autocrosses in town with Chuckanut are done for the season but I'm actually going down to Bremerton again this Sunday with the Porsche club again for their last event of the season, give me a call if your trying to head down there. Also the brakes are AWESOME, soooo much better than stock. I've just got Stoptech's new street pads in there for now but they're proving themselves very well. I still plan on taking the car to Quattrofest and I'll probably put in the race pads for that event as I can feel them start to fade a little when I really start working them. And I was thinking about getting them painted but I decided to just leave them red, I'm pretty happy with the look although at some point I'm going to pick up some brembo six pistons and I've convinced myself I want them to be black, oh and btw I need to get your bleeder back to you.

This is interesting, because both Dimcorner and I were discussing how the stock brakes may be "OK" for auto-x'ing, but I faded mine out at the end of my last two runs (when I was obviously pushing the car much harder). I have plans to eventually go BBK, but for now I might just try some better pads (in addition to the Motul RBF600 I just put in the car). Dimcorner says he's running slotted rotors and better pads, and he hasn't noticed any fade yet on the same track in hotter temperatures.

I'm jealous of your Tracksports BTW

Proper pads and fluid go a loooong ways. With some track pads and the Motul you will be just fine, the reasons I went with a BBK was for one I got a good deal on them, secondly I will be doing a lot of track days where I need to make stops from 130+ and wanted the extra insurance and cooling capabilities of the larger two piece rotors, modulation is much better with the 4 piston calipers, and I dropped over 10lbs per wheel up front of unsprung and rotating mass, plus they look awesome . My only issue currently with them is that Stoptech sized the pistons to move the brake bias towards the rear plus I have 034's 300mm rear upgrade pushing the bias even further towards the rear making the overall bias a lot more rearward than I would like when running equivalent street pads all around. When I go to the track (not autox, pads don't quite get hot enough) I'll leave the street pads in the rear and with a very aggressive track pad in the front (hawk blacks) the bias should be where I want it. Also thats one reason I want to get a hold of some Touareg calipers so I can get some of my front bias back and run track pads at all four corners. Plus the Touareg calipers fit right over the stoptech two piece rotors.

And jhm just came out with some two piece rotors for the touareg Which are even heavy/thicker then the 350mm rotors. Which i think is a good thing. You would think the 330s would be lighter

^Good to know. I'm positive my stock pads are the limiting factor at this point, so I'm already looking at some aggressive street pads to hold me over until I go BBK. And although I can't afford to attend any HDPE's at this time (as much as I'd love to), a good BBK will be my FIRST upgrade when I make the transition into wheel-to-wheel track events...

I have not yet personally tried it, however in one of those Touareg/Cayenne threads Max actually states that the rotors are a direct fit for the Touareg 330mm calipers, maybe he'll chime in on whether or not he has tried it.

Oh nice that's awesome it really is an amazing program that we're very fortunate to be a part of, and yes we sure are full force for this year's car, however we'll only be attending California this year and not Detroit. We're retooling the entire chassis and switching from the F4i to a turbo 600RR so we've got our hands full. We do plan on building another car next year based closely on this one that will go to Detroit. How about you guys?

Fikse Profil 13s, 18x8.5 35mm offset, ~17lbs, 3 piece, fully forged, blah blah, probably my favorite thing about that car. Fikse's have always been my favorite wheels and I never thought I'd get my hands on a set but thanks to CL and some guy that didn't know what he had I managed to snag these. They retail at $1050 PER WHEEL and I managed to trade a set of 18in. RS4 reps and $600 for them.

Ya you'll be just fine especially if all your doing is autoX. Also with some proper pads, rotors, and fluid you would be just fine doing a HDPE as long as the track isn't too demanding, however like I said before the big difference when moving to the BBK will be much better modulation and heat dissipation

So this begs the question, how many people on this site have participated/are participating/plan on participating in fsae programs? I'm going to be on the university of new mexico 2012 team, i guess we start initial planning and whatnot next semester.

I totally agree, I think I have learned more applicable engineering theory while working/designing the FSAE car then in the classroom. We just finished and submit the chassis, and now are starting to get the jigs and tubes prepared for welding. We did the switch from the F4i to the 600rr a year or so ago and happy with how the 600rr has been performing. I am currently researching the feasibility and how to setup these motors for forced induction (i love turbos). Do you have any book suggestions? I have been searching the FSAE forums for resources, but its slim. Probably won't expect to have a turbo 600rr this year, but hopefully next year. Shit that sucks, we usually attend Detroit and it's always good times and seeing all the different design and ideas. Never been to the California one so I can't compare the competition. I know that Detroit is always a tense 4 days, love that atmosphere.

I thought I updated it, but no the Stoptech rotors will not work (at least not without modification). Unfortunately the calipers are a bit tall and interfere with the hardware for the 2 piece rotors. The offset of the rotor works, but you would need to shave a considerable amount of material from the bottom of the calipers.

However, JHMotorsports now offers a 330mm rotor SPECIFICALLY for this Touareg/Cayenne 330mm application. They are the only bolt-on rotor for the Touareg 330mm calipers that require no modifications at all and are a perfect fit, period. They are also considerably cheaper then Stoptech rotors. I will be running these on my own car.
