    Torque Converter install?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Did a search, wanted to know if anyone ever did a Torque Converter DIY.

While I was reading through some posts I read a few people did the install wrong. Woundering if it is even something I want to do. I have a Lift so that part wouldn't be to bad.

Right now I have a k04 set up with ATP manifod, FMIC, APR ko4 tune and the 225 injectors. Alos S4 front breaks. I have a Tectonics Downpipe to install once I pick an exhaust and the VMR test pipe is already installed..

Decided to go with an eliminator kit but wanted to do the TC first, I already did the VB upgrade from 517

I was going to buy an IPT converter from Zimbuthemonkey but went a different route. Perhaps he will chime in.

I saw mention of you having an upgraded valve body and checked your started threads to find out how you liked it. I just came across this one so I figured I'd resurrect it. As for a TC DIY, there's none that I know of. However it's not hard to change it. Just pull the trans out, pull the old TC out slide the new one on and put it together. The only thing you need to know is this: DO NOT let the TC slide forward on the splined shaft as you're mating the trans and engine. What will happen is that it will drop and push against the front pump. The mistake people make is they force the two halves together and all of a sudden it just 'clicks' into place. That 'click' is your front pump breaking. You'll start it up and have no gears. Then you'll curse a blue streak that will make a sailor blush and pull the trans and replace it with a new one.

As for a TC, I still have my IPT one from my old tip setup (I did a 5 speed swap). I spoke to Ty and it is compatible with pretty much any 5HP-19FL or FLA. It did 7 dyno pulls with my GTRS elim, three were in 3rd gear four were in 4th (direct drive locked up). There was no hint of slip, so I know that it can handle a lot of abuse. PM me if you're interested in picking it up.

PS if you're interested in what a 5HP-19FL valve body looks like on the inside here's a little DIY I did on one http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...700&viewfull=1

The runs were done on a Dynocom at 3500 ft elevation. No correction of any sort, numbers are FWD.

The setup at the time I was only able to run at about 19 PSI on the stock SMIC (which by runs 4 and 7 was completely heat soaked). I also had part of the stock 2 in downpipe left which was a major restriction. To give you an idea of how bad it was choking things off, when I went with a straight through 3 in exhaust, full boost on the street dropped from 5000 to 4000 RPM. Full boost also went from 19 PSI to 22-24 PSI.

Anyway, take it for what it's worth. I'm sure those of you with a 3in exhaust and FMIC would see higher figures.

*No additional tuning or boost was added for the The M5 + 94 oct run. I just pretty much put it in and let 'er rip*

    Run 4 on 94 oct was 225.7 WHP 225.2 ft/lb

    Run 7 on M5 + 94 oct was 232.7 WHP 231.8 ft/lb
