B7A4 brake upgrade ** what about buying reman calipers?

I've been searching through the archives on B7A4 upgrades for my B6USP and getting good info. But, is there some obvious reason that I am missing why I don't seem to see any recommendations just to run to NAPA and buy reman calipers for, say, a 2008 Audi A4? They are 100$ and, at least on the website, have the Audi rings stamped on them making me think they'd be a nice refreshed OEM caliper source. Maybe it is because you also need to source the carriers and it is easier to get everything as one package? It doesn't seem used calipers from the classified are being sold for much less than this (in fact, I've seen $150 each referred to as a "good price").

The remanufactured calipers likely doesn't include:

    Carriers: about $150 each new.
Guide Pins: (2 needed per carrier) about $12 each new.
    Springs: $22 each new

So that alone would be about $400 in parts you'd have to buy to install those remanufactured calipers...not including the rotors and pads.

That's why $300 is a good price for a complete set of B7 A4 calipers (carriers/pins/springs included) in the classifieds.

Ah, thanks for the clarification. I knew there was an obvious reason. I didn't realize the carriers were so expensive.

Yea carriers are always damn expensive. If you have access to a CNC machine you could always make your own.

Don't forget when you buy those remaned calipers you most of the time need to return them the same calipers for a core charge.

Carriers are the part of the brake that gets attached to the car. The part that the two bolts go into that secure the caliper to the car. The caliper gets attached to the carrier and has the piston in it.

Reman calipers always come with the spring kit, and new pins. At least every one that I sell at advance auto does. And you can put whatever caliper you want in the box, how will anyone know until it gets to the reman company?

Karma is a bitch. That is just like saying they can put any caliper they want in the box you pay for. How pissed would you be if that happened to you.

I think we have proved the point that it is still cheaper to just buy used here and go from there.
