Thumbs up Motor is wearing excellently!

Oil: Motul 300V 4T Factory Line
    Viscosity: 5w40

Behold the power of high-end lubricants. Repeated WOT, minimal highway use, regular "short trips", and several race days. Everything looks great even at 60k on the motor! This seals the deal...will use the same oil at my next change. You can also see that it has barely sheared with my driving style; 100C kinematic viscosity is still a light 40/heavy 30.

Previous owner fed it OEM Castrol and Mobil 1 for the first 50k. Just proof that most modern synthetics are over-engineered for the vast majority of drivers.

(Note that this was a sample of partially-used oil. I am trying to determine the change interval on this stuff. I did not drain the oil and replace at 1,900 miles!)

Congrats, I have a strange obsession with sending my oil to Blackstone but at only 1900 miles I think you got me beat.

Dan seems to be pretty obsessed with oil. I'd say his oil obsession could be hard to beat. But thanks for posting, I think I will try something other than Lubromoly next summer, probably that Motul 300V.

I was trying to figure out if this oil can handle over 5k given my driving style & habits. Looks like it can. I was also curious how the motorcycle version would hold up but it looks good.

Tribology is very intriguing to me.

Also, for those interested, my previous analysis of Lubro-Moly 5w40 after 5,000 miles showed rather poor results. There was excessive aluminum wear and the oil had sheared to a much lighter grade. The TBN was steady but it was really apparent that it simply wasn't up to the task of protecting under extreme circumstances (racing).

I pulled a sample with a small pump. Didn't change the oil. Just needed to see how it was doing at 2000 so I could extrapolate out to 5,000 and beyond.

Makes me want to try some Spectro now, I used to use Motul all the time, but found Spectro to be just that little bit better in my race bike. Nice info Dan.

Depending on how the oil looks right before the change, I might even give Torco SR-5 a try. It's a 5w40 race oil...very high ZDDP levels, more ester content. And, according to Torco, it's used by the US Govt in the Predator drones.

so dan, between the penzoil European formula 5w40 and the shell rotella t6 5w40, which would you prefer to use in a daily s4 with 5k oil change intervals.

If you're referring to Pennzoil Platinum OR Ultra, those are both excellent oils, as is Rotella T6. From what I hear, the PP/PU is a bit heavier on cleaners & detergents so if your motor has been getting crappy oil up until now, it may work better. Otherwise, T6 is really solid. You can probably take it well past 5k...it's a "heavy duty" oil designed for vehicles with longer change intervals.

So what if wear accelerates as the oil gets older? In other words, what are the chances that there's going to be no wear and contamination for the first 1900 miles, but the remaining 3100 miles will show a higher rate of wear/mile as the oil gets older, and then at the 5k sample this oil turns out to be no better than Mobil 1? I'm just sayin'.

Based on the results, there's plenty of additive left and that shouldn't be an issue. If the additive had been depleted, and/or TBN had fallen substantially, I'd say that this won't do so well over the long-haul. The viscosity did not drop much either so it doesn't seem to have problems with high temperature either (shearing). It's my repeated short trips and track time that really beats up an oil, though this 300V can take the abuse...it is a race oil after all.

I doubt this could run out to 10,000, but it looks like 5,000-7,500 should be just fine. A more tame driver could probably do 10,000 on this stuff.

Dan, where do you purchase your Motul, and do you burn through oil at the Audi spec of 1 qt every 1000 miles, or not anywhere near that?

I burn through 1-1.5 qt per oil change. 1qt per 1000 miles is excessive.

ECS sells Motul at a very reasonable price.

Yay Rotella T6. Someone ought to do a blackstone test with that (I've got a new motor, metals will be out of whack I think)

Yes but if you're like me and don't drive much, it's not a big deal. I don't mind spending a little extra for better protection.

If I didn't race the car, I'd run Rotella T6 or something else less expensive.

ECS's website says the stuff is special order and won't arrive until December 27th. I'll call them next chance I get and see if I can't get it sooner than two months from now. It's not coming from Mars, and it's not like they have to chop down some ester trees to make the stuff from scratch.

You can get it from other sources. MatrixSyntheticOils, PureMS, eBay, and some of your local speed shops may carry it.

I don't want this thread to become "OMG MOTUL 300V IS TEH COOL". This car saw OEM Castrol and Mobil 1 for the first 50k and it's clearly very healthy.

Well, I run into the "six month" rule before I hit 5k miles, and honestly, with only two oil changes per year, I think I can splurge. I don't race, but it's kind of a "why not?" thing in my case. Even at ~$165 shipped, that's still only about $350/yr in oil changes with filters. I'm pretty sure most owners spend more than that on oil changes each year even using cheap stuff. I've been using Castrol Syntec 5w40, and I think I might finally have been convinced to get off my ass and buy something better than what the store 1/2 a mile away sells on their shelves. I'd really, really this engine to have every possible chance of staying healthy for as absolutely long as possible, given the number of issues I've seen with them.

i feel the same way. the motor burned the dealer castrol, mobil 1 and pentosin, nothing bad, less than a quart between oil changes. However with the total and now the Lubro molly, not a drop burned. what i put in i get out. im a lil curious about the rotella t6, but ill give it a try, ill also see if they have the penzoil stuff by chance.
