Rear fog light out mystifys me!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
If this is covered elsewhere apologies!!

02 A4 Quattro 3.0 manual. I have a bulb out right rear fog. I replaced the bulb AND the housing (black housing which houses all connectors and bulbs for taillight assembly). All of my connections look great, no corrosion or wear visible at all. YET I cannot get this to work. Any ideas I'd appreciate!

    Thanks

    Best regards,

We American drivers just don't realize how it's done across the pond, lol. Correct on the above. There is only one, on the left. It's so cars behind you in fog can determine which side of the car they are approaching, I believe.

Hmm I am puzzled then, I am sure there is a bulb in the corresponding right rear light. Am I wrong? Does it say this anywhere in the manual (one rear fog on left) ? when i went to get inspected they didn't want to pass it because it appeared out, talked them into it.

    thanks

There is a place for it, but no wiring. My best guess is that the tail lights/bulb trays are universal for all models around the world, but wiring harnesses are option specific; only RHD cars will light up the right side rear fog. Trust that we know that it's not supposed to light up.

Oh no bro I believe you and appreciate the info/insight. Just wondering for future reference (inspection at NON-Audi) dealer if I can show this in a manual.

You don't need rear fogs to pass inspection. I'd be nervous leaving my car with someone that couldn't figure this out. Don't pull the headlight dial all the way out when turning on the headlights and it won't look like something is missing. If you are really worried about it remove the left bulb and you will never have a problem.

Both my B5 and B7 have only a left rear fog. I have only ever used them in whiteout snow conditions and monsoon rain.

Check out the manual and let us know what it says.

I remember in my vw Mk4 days that dudes on the vwvortex would wire up both rear fog sockets to work. To me, that's pointless. But it CAN be done...

Well while I appreciate your input you obviously have never had a NYS inspection. If there is a light it has to light, it has to work.

You can also wire up the fogs on each side to be part of the brake light circuit. That way you have more light output for the brake lights. There's a DIY for the B5's on this anyway. I don't know what the bulb auto-check would think of it, but there are ways around that.

I did that on my R32 a few years ago and would love to do it with the Audi, is there a DIY? When I replaced a tail light bulb recently the wiring of the tail light looked more like a circuit board and I couldn't see how I could get it to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't done it, but from what I remember, you soldered a wire between the traces on the circuit board to bridge the circuits in the lamp housing. Obviously, cutting the trace upstream for the rear fog lamp, or cutting the wire would be necessary as well.

Here is one that I found, but I don't like how this one is done. I did the same thing inside the car with two taps and 1 wire. You just need to get a bulb and undo the one side to install the bulb and it will work after that tap is done to bridge them together.
