I don't use steelies but do run 16 inch on winter tread (Blizzaks) and they are excellent. The general belief is that a narrower winter tire (which means higher profile on 16 inch rims to maintain the circumference) will perform better. This has been my experience. Don't expect the handling in the dry to be anywhere near your 18 inch summer treads (cornering or braking).

Your question might be addressed faster in the Wheel/Tire forum since there are not many people running 16s.

Yea good point, I mean you do cut the snow better to a certain extent of 20mm less on each tire than stock 17".
Do you get a lot of snow and shit stuck in between your mags and the brake area since its really tight?
Tried 17 inch initially and went to 16. Noticeably better traction and control in deeper snow and less snow packing in the wells. Not much difference on ice though.

Size of the wheel doesn't matter, what matters is the width of the tire, narrower the better for snow
