Question Ko3 is blown! What are my options?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I kinda did a little searching around here for options to replace my k03. Here's my story to help you understand -

I bought the car to carry my daughter around in. It's also my DD. So this needs to be SAFE + RELIABLE! I also enjoy a bit of go in my cars. I think it's also safer. Ever have to gas out of a situation? I'm not going to skimp on this car like I did on my 7 (buying used parts all the time) so I would like to get at least decent quality stuff. Nothing cheap. I'm not made of money though, but I did get a nice new job recently. It's an 03, quattro, 1.8t (obviously) all stock. Stock comfort suspension too.

So, my ko3 has a TON of shaft play in it. It's just time now before she totally bites it. It still spools, but makes noise when hot/cold when I rev the motor. My coilpacks went (big surprise there) but on the way to the dealer I blew my cat as well. So I bought a test pipe. That will be put on when I do the turbo. I want to flash the ECU with APR. So I figured since I want to flash it, why not upgrade the turbo + do all this at once?

I hear that frankenturbo's are good, also inexpensive. Or there's a Ko4. My problem with that is I'm guessing it will only last me another 100k or less. Either way I will be getting TT225 injectors + the appropriate APR flash (there's a dealer close by that I'll be going to for this)

Thoughts? Concerns? Questions? I'd really like to know just about everything before I go into spending over a grand on this.

    Thanks in advance.

Go frankenturbo! Definitely best bang for your buck. All you need is the frankenturbo kit, tt225 injectors, and a k04 tune and your good to go

Just a stock K04 along with a testpipe is a nice boost in power...but = CEL.

K04+HFC=save yourself about $1000.00 bucks or more, if you don't do an intercooler, injectors or even software and be done with it. Pretty much a bulletproof setup. But you have been warned, the search for more power will lead your wallet down the "darkside"

    K04+tt225 injectors+intercooler+software= $1500.00 to $2000.00 including installation...kind of a high price for 50 or 60 extra horsepower and torque.

Yeah, that part is $1000.00...the OTHER goodies that you need are tt225 injectors are about $250.00, intercooler about $500.00 to $1000.00, and the tune is about $400.00, and if your not handy...install fees.

Install is no problem at all with me. I did my timing belt + regular maint on this car, on my RX7 I did a complete motor/trans/rear end swap, coilovers, Poly bushings everywhere, delrin mounts, FMIC, + a ton of other crap I don't want to list at the moment. I know that speed is addictive. I have a sports car + a sport bike. I don't want this to go super fast (that's what the sports car is for) I'd just rather replace broken stuff with something better.

As for the CEL, the APR flash should get rid of that.

Since you are already getting TT225 injectors, Franken would be the way to go.

If you don't have a flash already, I would skip APR. Just get Uni stage 2+.

I'd say go GTRS elim. Ko4's get very old after awhile and a GTRS is not really fast at all.

good advise. (and from someone who came from an APR K04 tune) this will also allow for more options down the road once the mod addiction takes hold.

I think people are forgetting that the GTRS and other turbo would need more supporting mods and make it significantly more expensive.

    ^ exactly.

A replacement K03 with injectors, tune, and upgraded DV will be about $1k + replacement turbo cost. It will net you about 60chp/100ctq over stock. That's a big increase and will definitely give the OP the added power while being perfectly reliable and not requiring other mods. An FMIC would be a nice addition, and if in the budget I'd spend a few hundred more and go K04. A K04 with FMIC and mods mentioned above will also be a very reliable setup.

+1. Whatever you get to replace your K03 I'd recommend a Uni tune. Do you have a Unitronic dealer near you?

    dont buy mine........sold last night!

OP: if your looking to replace your KO3 then go Ko4 if your on a budget. RPKo4's are the same price of a BW KO3.
Best bet is to figure where you REALLY want the car to be, (fun, Fast,) or both. THen decide on your Budget.
We all say i'm gonna do this an thats it.............nah never works! I just did a motor build and BT setup and i already want a BIGGER turbo. Its only been running since Thursday of last week.

I'm sure if you posted your goals and a budget, we all could help you on your decisions.

That's exactly what you get with the Frankenturbo Kit and it also includes the turbo and hi flow manifold all for $1100. The kit is proven good for 300 CHP.

Frankenturbo is a fabulous buy at $1100.00 bucks, however it does NOT include tt225 injectors, or a fmic, or a tune...thats where the other $1800 comes from. Go OEM and save some bank...kind of a no brainer to me...Ask yourself this question, do you really need build another 300+ horsepower car to drive your child around with, isn't the other car and bike enough?

It's not even all about the HP, it's the passing power and the torque. F4h-l all the way. Show me a BT with this kind of torque and powerband? Perfect for a DD? It's really how these A4's should have come factory, with a K04-020 a la TT, not a de-tuned Jetta engine in a 3500LB AWD car.

He's only saving about $300 if he stays with a K03 and injectors. But for that $300 saving he's missing out on 75hp and better power band. He won't even get an extra 75hp with a tune and injectors, not to mention $300 more than the initial tune will cost him.

Is this somthing you wanna do all in on shot with the ic and all? I mean i installed my f4h setup with a revo stage 1 tune and over stock it is amazing. Ill be going stage 2 soon with stock ic for a little till i can replace that and the exhaust. Ive been told that would work but not to its full capability. Thats cool with me just means i can enjoy it a step at a time and will take longer to get bored.. If im wrong, anyone, please let me know i dont wanna miss inform if i was misinformed. Lol

He doesn't have a flash yet, so he can get a more appropriate tune when/if he gets the franken.

Going the Frankenturbo route would also necessitate a new clutch I believe. Stock clutch wouldn't last too long with that kind of torque.

Not really, the stock clutch is rated at 275 ft/lbs, while the Franken is producing more torque than that it shouldn't make it slip unless his clutch is on it's way out anyway. I'd suggest a light clutch upgrade when his clutch does go out, like Southbend HD it's rated at 325 ft/lbs and should be more than enough.

Your looking at it in the chart above. Could more be extracted sure, he didn't run a FMIC with that dyno, so numbers could be better.

so thats 239 whp and 265 ft-lbs on stock intercooler with injectors and a flash (and F4a kit obviously), seeing boost before 3K, and holding 18psi almost to redline? Well i guess i know what turbo setup i'm going with =)
