brake system bleed

I was wondering about the DIYs for a brake fluid bleed. I don't have a VAG-COM so how can I flush out the ABS unit? Can I follow any conventional brake bleed method? Do I need any special tools to a perform a brake bleed? What about a gravity bleed, how many hours does it take and is it the best method? My B5 A4 has 90K miles 2.8 Quattro.
