Question Coolant Bleeder Screw information??? (yes I searched)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Can anyone tell the the size and thread pitch of the coolant bleeder screw that goes into the hard coolant line on top of the engine?

Mine is snapped off and leaking. The VW dealership had to order a replacement and it won't be in until Wednesday. They couldn't tell me the size\thread pitch. I would really like to buy a metal one and get the car on the road sooner as it is my daily driver.

I found the part number in a different thread but can't come up with the rest of the info anywhere.

I tried to order the whole hard pipe instead but no-one in town has one.

Silly little $5 part is keeping me off the road!

audi dealer probably has one on hand, unsure if the metal vw ones are the same. If they are I might get one of them.
I broke the head of mine off and was in a pinch as well.

    what I did:
with the engine cold (so it isnt spraying everywhere)
put some rtv silicone on top of the piece left in the pipe.
Put the piece that broke off (piece in your hand =/) on top of that.
smeared some silicone around it and put 2 metal zip ties in an X fashion over the cap, and around the pipe to hold it down.

dont know if this'll work in your situation, but it worked for my 3 hr ride back to school and for the following 2 weeks until i could get the time to fix it. good luck.

    necessity, mother of all invention.

yea if your going to find short ones, or cut them down to the correct size. i was just thinking teflon tape. allthough i think its the stock bolt itself thats grooved not the threaded pipe. so the home depot bolt should block it right off...

    should?

So the best thing to do is take a wild guess at the thread pitch and screw size?

I'm not sure I want to remove the busted screw until I have the new one in hand.

The closest Audi dealership is 2 hours drive from here so the VW dealership ordered the Audi parts for me.

I may have to mickey mouse a fix with rtv or something until the parts get here. :(

Uh, not trying to be a wet blanket, but just how far do you intend to drive like that? If that jury-rig holds for more than 15 minutes, and under pressure?!? I would be very surprised...

Try NOT to rev the engine past 3000 rpm. and keep it out of boost...Personally, I would be more concerned about that stuff getting inside the engine and possibly clogging something up...

If you can see on the original picture there is still half the screw and a rubber o ring in there under the busted part of the cap that I put on. It took almost 1 week for the coolant to leak down to the min line without any of this jury rigging in place... so I think I'll be fine here. Thanks for the concern though. I will be driving as little as possible and not pushing it hard at all.

looks like itll work if your saying its not leaking too bad. but id swap the zip tie for a hose clamp.

I had the same problem. I just tied a rag around it, kinda like you did, and drove the car as my DD for 3 days until Audi got the part in. I drive 50 miles a day (25 to and 25 from), I would check it before and after I drove the car. I think you should be fine.

good to hear. you're in a pinch, you gotta make it happen.

@ggcrash, how is the rtv getting in the engine? it'd have to get past the lower half of the bleeder screw first.

Coolant Bleeder Screw information??? (yes I searched)

I ordered one and it was wrong so i improvised and used a Allen bolt from a junk passat with a gasket i had and if its stripped you will need to remove the tube to try and fix it. You can probably get away with tapping it with a bottoming tap.
