is it safe to remove the metal cross piece under car?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Couldn't find good thread or info maybe words are too generic and common but yea is it ok to remove that metal piece cross member or whatever under the car, the one exhaust runs on top off?

Got a bigger diameter pipe and it hits it. Not sure what the purpose is anyway

I had mine destroyed from being almost 3" lower than stock on the b5 a4. Removed the rest of the shit that was hanging down and car never ever had a problem. No vibrations, nothing. So....... yes, you'll be fine without it.

Hmm.... i'm experiencing strange vibrations now, originally thought i was a wheel off balance, but turns out to not be that. So now I'm wondering if it's something of this nature that is causing it, but it's not just at idle, its also during regular highway speeds...

edit: so that metal piece is not my issue, just checked and its not touching it... still wondering what's causing the vibrations though...

Does the tone/volume change when you turn on the ac? If so, it is the exhaust rubbing on something

This! I had the same problem, my heatshields on the exhaust were loose and rubbing the exhaust when it rattled. Also, the rubber hangers weren't the best hangers for the job.

Have you thought about using longer bolts and put a spacer or some washers on to give you enough clearance.

It might give enough clearance for exhaust but the piece itself will still stick out, for now, i want to take it off. ill put it back on once i figure out a good way to bend it.

You'd think that there is an Audi mechanic on here that could tell us what this is for. My guess is structural rigidity to make the frame rigid incase of an accident. Your car might pancake easier if T-boned?

That metal piece seems to bend pretty easy with just some hand power, with a few tons i think it will crumple up anyway...lol

Yeah I think that piece is just there to protect the exhaust sleeve from snagging. It is way too flimsy to accomplish anything structurally, and if you rubbed it I think it would just collapse. My car scrapes more on the transmission brace/subframe thats in the top left of the above picture. Don't think my crossmember has taken much abuse... Ditch it if you want. The sleeve on the exhaust will be exposed to shit under the car though.
