    Windshield Wipers Concern

    Hi all,

My car didn't come equipped with rain and light sensor, so I have to toggle the wiper stalk every time it rains. So lets say I get out of the car to get groceries; I leave the stalk in the intermittent position. After I come back, restart the car, the wipers don't automatically start, I either have to flick it to a different intermittent interval or toggle it off and then back on again for it to start wiping again.

Is this normal or is this an issue?

Know just what you are on about. Mine do the same thing no matter what position you leave the stalk in. I just flick the stalk to whatever setting I need when I get back in the car. Hadn't thought about it that much

This is normal, because most people will not turn off their wipers if they get out of the car in the pouring rain - they'll just shut off the car and go. If you come back to a dry windshield, start up the car and your wipers start grinding all over the dry glass (you know, that lovely sound and smearing), it's bad news for that wax coating we have on our blades.

Nothing to be concerned about. Just like the passive door lock feature, it will activate once vehicle speed is up to 16km/h.

they also stop (slow down drastically) when your car is stopped, e.g. at a red light. NEAT!

I have the rain sensor and I hate the way it works. Say you have condensation on your windshield in the morniing. Even if you have the stalk set to auto with the highest sensitivity it will not wipe the window until you start driving past 12mph. You have to either tap the stalk or change the sensitivity down and then up to get them to wipe. If the sensor senses water it should wipe even if the car is not moving. Not a huge deal but a minor frustration.

I also have this sensor & don't like it as well. I'd rather the car just wipe the windsheild within the perameters of what you want - via adjusting the dial for slow to medium or faster. The sensor just does what it wants regardless....I don't like it when wipers just go ape shit fast which is usually what they end up doing

If you don't have a rain sensor and you turn the car off with the wiper stalk in an on position, the wipers will not run when you turn the car back on, no matter how fast you drive...

I agree the rain sensor has it pro's and con's. Overall i think it does the job.
I do have two other things that makes me wonder....
    1. Is it me or do the whipers at full speed aren't swigging fast enough during intense rain fall? Maybe it is me but i have been in several intense rain falls where i really couldn't see shit because the whipers weren't going fast enough. I was wondering if i could increase the whiper speed in VAGcom (without during the motors :d ).
    2. Again maybe me, but the waterspay outlets on the audi are so oldschool. Nice that they have added 6 front screen outlets, but why didn't they use some better heads? I refurring to those 'shower' head where instead of one beam, the water gets sprayed more in a fog cloud. The mercedes and even opel uses that kind of heads and imho they do a much better job. I wonder if we could change the heads in some way.
*I hate to refill the resevoir each XX days because the damn car uses 6 + 2 or 4 poor beams (xenon lights).
    Anybody suggestions?
As to the initial topic poster, it is indeed a build in safety measure. Imho a good thing.
