This. Your MAF sensor is on it's way out, and from time to time is sending an implausible signal.

I really doubt that the MAF would have anything to do with the ESP. The ESP is part of the ABS system and I would start by checking for DTC's in the ABS...possible clock spring failure or something of that nature.

Lets say that it was the "Clock Spring",that was bad...the part runs around 400 dollars, not including repair.

What on earth are you talking about? Clock spring? MAF sensor has nothing to do with ESP? If you do not know the answer, kindly refrain from trying to post one. The ESP uses the MAF g/s to calculate engine load vs. wheel speed to monitor wheel slippage. The MAF is sending implausible signals to the ECU, thus alarming the ESP system, though it hasn't yet failed completely, thus no CEL has been stored, yet. This is a common failure, as well as a common symptom. This is a MAF sensor failure, cut and dry.

I think this thread should be titled "esp mil won't turn off".

When i saw it I thought someone had the same issue I'm dealing with and opposite of the OP - I actually can't get the ESP to disable, meaning I can't get the light to come ON. I do suspect my auto-level control error to be the main cause but wouldn't mind it if somebody could just confirm this with me. I have no other codes aside from a level sensor (g76?) and a headlight adjustment error (likely also due to the level sensor fault).

WHat V8weight said, its fairly common among the B5's. Happened to me once on a ski trip, just pulled over and unpluged (no vag com) the battery for 15-30 mins and was good to go for the rest of the weekend. Got home cleaned my MAF and got lucky they it hasnt happened again.

What do you mean it's lean in two cylinders? There's nothing in the car to monitor A/F ratios of individual cylinders. The p2096/2098 refers to post catalyst fuel trims, which could be due to the MAF sensor reading low, or it could be due to the efficiency of your catalysts themselves. Replace the MAF sensor, clear codes, and go from there.
