SPA manifold + Wastegate Location = Fail

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
how many of you, that are running the SPA manifold, have had issues keeping the wastegate on?

My wastegate will not stay tight. I ordered nordlocks, used them, and they helped it to stay on about a week and a half longer then just lock washers.

this time I heard it leaking, pulled over, it was just only slightly loose, figured I could make it home, continued, and heard a loud metal on metal "bang" and then something started bouncing off the road... at 65mph... go ahead, take a guess as to what it was.

So now I need a new Valve Seat for my wastegate, and I also need to take it apart, and make sure that its not fucked.

but anyways, if anyone else has had this problem, please tell me what you did to remedy it. I'm about to take off the manifold and have the wastegate welded on, but that is not ideal. its getting too cold out to have to fuck with that.

    cliffs:

    wastegate constantly comes loose. fail

    tried nordlocks. fail.

burnt the living fuck out of my arm on my turbo. fail

wastegate finally fell off at 65mph, pretty beat the fuck up. fail

this sux man. could it be a thread issue in the manifold? perhaps try opening the bolt holes a bit and inserting a helicoil? That should keep it in there for sure while still allowing you the ability of removing the wastegate.

Wow, that's a first for me to hear about. I've had my SPA manifold on for almost 2 years and not once has the wastegate come loose.

I've only ever seen helicoils for sparks plugs in my local auto parts stores.... I assume they make them in various sizes? Thats a really good Idea though, I never even thought about that.

thats what everyone I've spoken to says! urgh, this is super fucking frustrating, as you could only imagine, having the same manifold and knowing how its positioned.

I ran the SPA for about 1 year...didn't have that problem. Perhaps some ultra high-temp lock-tight? Its out there up to like 1500 or 2000 Deg F I think...that stuff is pretty brutal! I use it on my turbine to exhaust bolts to keep them in place and have never had an issue.

    This.

I had a problem when i did my turbo build - i couldnt keep the damn turbo tight to the mani!!! lol it never fell out or anythign like that but it was getting loose!

I looked all over and 034 is the only place that had anything that was good NEAR 2000F (turbo can get to like 1700F ish)

So, yeah long story short i put a dab or two of the high temp thread lock and BOOM - no problems at all - only down side is that it is $40 plus shipping lol... but you do get a lifetime supply XD

If you want, i can sell you my 3/4 full bottle for $20 shipped, trust me, even half of a bottle is a lifetime supply (its huge) (thats what she said) (sorry)

Thats what is going to happen, if this lock tite doesn't solve the problem. thats last resort though, this mani is a pain in the ass to install/remove.

This manifold is not a pain in the ass to install. This thing is a breeze, 15 to 20 mins tops. You must have never dealt with one of those ATP manifolds.

After you use 1/4 bottle, want to pass it this way? I'll make sure to pass it on to the next guy. =)

lol it takes longer than 15 or 20 mins, and its really not a pain, just time consuming. and yes, I had to deal with a ATP manifold, and they are 10 times worse than this SPA mani lol.

Hmmm.... I've not had this problem with mine. I'm using norlock washers and red threadlock, just went out and checked it.... still tight. Maybe you overtightened it?

Drill a hole in the head of the bolts and run safety wire through them. This is done on alot of race cars.

I've done this to every turbo I've built and never had a problem.

Red loctite will just burn off and create a lot of smoke do so. BTDT.

I found heavy duty loctite on the FP page while browsing the different HTA turbos they had, $10 for a tube (requires a $20 mininum order so might as well add that HTA 3076R to your cart while your at it):
