    Hi all,

firstly this is probably one of the best forums ive been on!

im after some advice on what to look for when buying a high milage avant 1.8t, iver driven the car and no knocks or starge noises the air con and eltrics all seem fine and for the last three years has been owned by a chick! who has had it sevices regualary as did the 1 previous owner.

any advice on some hidden problems i might have missed let me know.

first mod will be lowering it, probaly wont go down the coilover route so any advice on a good shock and sprin combo would be appreciated. i will also get it chipped ASAP so advice on that would also be a help.

Cheers.....will get some pics up as soon as i get it!

The "Search" function on this website is fantastic and has a ton of great material that has been archived over the years.

That said, you definitely need to find out if the timing belt was done (and when), if there are any coolant leaks (rear flange), tranny problems (manual or tiptronic), cv boots (replaced? if not get them checked out), fuel filter repalced?, fuel pump replaced?, etc.

I'm sure there's more but again--check the search function for "high mileage" or something like that. Should pull up a lot of good info.

not really high mileage for a European car. over 175k i would call high. i've seen a few saabs, a couple audi's, and some old bmw's well into the 300s and still running rock solid.

Unless the timing belt has been changed I would avoid any B5/B6 over 100k unless the price was REALLY right. Check for oil leaks at the back of the head. Check the rear diff axle seals for leakage.

As far as the flash goes, just go with whatever tuner is closest to you. Until you go BT, they are all the same-although I prefer Revo. For stance, I have USP struts and Tein springs and it is perfect for me. Good enough to go around the mountain in 6 inches of snow, and low enough to sit in the weeds if the grass hasn't been cut in a week during summer. Vogtland sells a cup kit for the B6 that is really nice too. 500 for struts and springs.

If the timing belt has not been replaced ($1500ish from the stealer), I would ask for that cost to come off the current price of the car.. or at least try and split it. I picked up my avant for $7500, they were asking $10k.. needed timing belt, front brakes and a cv axle. Better safe than sorry if you are unsure of the timing belt replacement.
