2 questions: timing belt kit(s) and model year

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am buying a timing belt from either MJM Autohaus or ECS Tuning.

    MJM:

    kits include:

    OEM timing belt
    OEM serpentine belt
    OEM tensioner roller
    OEM crankshaft seal
    OEM camshaft seals, a pair
    OEM G12 coolant, two bottles
OEM belt tensioner (with idler roller)
German water pump with metal impeller
    This product fits:

    2002-1/2004 Audi A4 1.8T (AMB)

    ECS:
    Kit includes the following parts:
OE timing belt made by Continental
OE tensioner Roller made by Ruville in Germany
OE tensioner assembly made by Ruville in Germany
OE Idler roller (comes on the tensioner assembly)
Hepu water pump with metal impeller

The MJM kit seems to include a lot more for only $224.95 vs. $219.95 for the ECS kit.

Sound like a good choice? According to both suppliers, both kits are OEM.

    Second Question:

How do I know if I have an early or late 2004 A4?

Hey Corey.... go with the MJM.... if you call them and tell them your VIN they'll tell you exactly which year belt you need.

you can get the ECS kit that comes with the coolant and extra item also, although i think it comes to about $249- so it's more then the MJM kit costs.

also if you look on ECS's site it will show two timing belt kits, one for early 04 and one for late 04 models, the description of each kit mentions which they fit.

    "Up to VIN #8E 4 191 000, split is in model year 2004" = ECS Part# 3960

    "From VIN #8E 4 191 001, split is in model year 2004" = ECS Part# 6143

Im leaning toward MJM too but I have sent them PM's with my VIN and pretty much everything about my car short of the volume of washer fluid in the reservoir and they said they weren't sure. They said to check in my door jam, and the only thing I can see that might be a production date is "06/03"...but my car is an '04. So I just want to be absolutely sure before I order that I am getting the right kit. Thanks for the tip James!

Ahhh I see it now...they seem to have the same components for the kits.

    Up to VIN #8E 4 191 000 is early 04
    Up to VIN #8E 4 191 001 is late 04

so if my vin ends in 016 740?

Im starting to think my car is an '03 and the dealer lied haha.

    check my previous post.

if your VIN is higher then "8E 4 191 001" it was a "late 04 model"
if the VIN is is lower then "8E 4 191 001" the car is a "early 2004 model"

i don't have my car today (lost my fucking keys) so i can't check the VIN, i think the "8E 4" shoudl be the beginning, not the end but i could be wrong. the full VIN is like 25 charters long so i would need to see the whole thing to determine what "section" ECS is revering to.

I just bought the mjm kit but didn't use any of the seals. Still a good deal though. I emailed [email protected] and they responded right away.
