    Dentist drill under my hood

When i start my car it sounds like there is a dentist drill towards the left side of the engine. It has a code for Sec air flow but when someone checked the vacum lines they all seemed to be in place. the sound last for about 20 seconds then it seems to idle fine. Also when under steady acceleration it seems to kick/bog down for a split second then it runs fine. ANY tips/suggestions as to what could be causing the sound/hesitation?? THANKS!

Hold on now guys, this sounds like it's just a secondary air pump failing. Mine used to do the same thing. Even after I got new turbos it still did it only upon cold starts. (The turbos happened to be blown, but I also thought the noise upon startup was due to the turbos) If it's only making this noise on startup and not under acceleration then it's an indication of a bad secondary air pump not a bad turbo.

We'll put it this way: don't go pulling out your turbo until you're positive that's whats making the noise (and it sounds to me like it's not). Good luck

EDIT: Assuming it is the secondary air pump, that noise means that it is on its last legs but that it is still working

He said left side of his bay... as in the drivers side guys. The guys in the b6 forum tend to jump to say a turbo is bad, so I guess you guys do as well. I was told mine was bad but mine doesn't whine anything like the two videos... and only at above 5psi which you can't get at idle with a ko3. Plus he said its only when idling thus the turbo isn't spooling and it would have to be sai pump related.

Now onto trying to help. Crawl under your car and unplug the power cable to the sai pump and then start it. If it doesn't make any noise then you can assume that the pump is whats wrong.

good advice! but the sec air pump is on the right side, the pass side-not the left(drivers). what about the aux water pump?

Ya I know where the pump was, I was just saying its not the turbo. So the real question is what besides the sai pump an combi valve work for the first 20 seconds of running and then stop?

I was thinking about that but doesn't the vacuum pump only come on automatics?

Seeing as how it only makes noise on start up and i have a CEL for sec air flow im leaning toward a vacum issue. And yes the noise was coming from passenger side of engine

    *BINGO*

Passenger side of engine + drill noise during first 30-ish seconds on a cold start = Secondary Air pump is bad.

Best bet is to find a used one as they are $Cash Money$ for a new one from the dealer. Probably under a hundred bucks for a used one. If you don't mind the CEL, and don't have to pass emissions, you can just unplug the thing and be done with it. It's only purpose is cold start emissions, nothing to do with how the car runs.

Stuttering is probably just a dirty MAF or an ignition problem (coil pack, plugs, oil in the plug holes, etc). I believe that issue to be separate and not at all related to his cold start noise. The fact that the noise stops after a set period of time points directly to the SAI pump and nothing else.

Sai, I have mine unplugged and I get a p0411 but my car runs great regardless.

See that plug hanging down? That's the plug for the Sai.

Ps: Excuse the hideous headlights and emblem, I took care of those the day I got the car home. I also zip-tied the plug out of view.

im thinking about removing the whole SAI system since the pump is most likely poor anyways. however im not sure what the emission reqs are for my area
