it's laying on your back, cold garage floor, shop light, to install a DV valve. Three bolts they say! Hour to get them out they say! Ugh... after using a short stubby allen wrench to get the bottom one off my arm felt like I'd punched my dolphin for a month strait. Middle one not so bad, used a socket wrench for that. Top one I had my wife drop the wrench between the radiator and engine to back it out while I held the bit to keep it from popping off the bolt head. Scarred hand, sore shoulder blade, and three hrs later it's upgraded and ready for APR this week. Least I saved the $, but fook. Between this and my test pipe install I hope to Christ the cam follower isn't as much a hassle.

Still have my stock dv valve if anyone's interested in it.

If you think a concrete floor is bad, try doing an FWD to AWD conversion on a gravel driveway!! Now THATS bad.....Lol But I do feel for you none the less!!

I spent many a cold fall/winter evening in my driveway lying under my friend's S-10. I know your pain, but at least you knew what you're doing. Took him half a year and eventually a tow to a shop just to rebuild and install a short block.

If there were two guys named Hambone and Flippy, which one would you think liked dolphins more? I bet you'd say Flippy, wouldn't you?

But you would be wrong. It's Hambone.

I did the DV install in 25 minutes and 2 beers. It's nice to have a second set of hands working from on top while one of you is on the garage floor

Yeah, best to go in from the top with another set of hands to help with that upper most bolt.

I feel the pain, did mine this summer, managed to slip off and slice my knuckle on the fan shroud. Then put my mechanix gloves on.

Agreed, I think this is at least a 2 beer project.

Isn't it amazing how beers can just amazingly help a project go by? and they are great for bartering with friends to come over and help.

I was fortunate enough to have my car on a lift when I installed it. Soooo much easier, seeing as though my first attempt with it on ramps failed epically.

I agree, beer is definitely necessary for this job - it's a PITA. I was able to get the top bolt by feel somehow. Pretty sure I was a blind man in a past life. However, after I got the damn thing off, I discovered that the previous owner had already changed it. Doh!

The new one that I never put on is in the Canadian classifieds if anyone needs one.

That was the reason for my struggle during my first attempt.

I feel your pain man, we had about three knuckles and four extensions running off of our ratchet and were laying on a piece of plywood covered in oil from the oil change we decided to do first

At the end of the day though, it feels much better than taking it to the shop and paying out your arse for someone else to do it

My first attempt was a big fail after half an hour trying to get to the bolts. I got it second time in about 1hr and half, but then surprise. After a few weeks I checked my cam follower and guess what? It needed to be replaced along with the cam and HPFP (CPO here). So I took it off and put the stock one back, just to play safe. So soon I have to go through that again.

Well, you have to figure that it shouldn't really take that long. I mean, he pointed at the fuse box and said "wow, my spark plugs are up high" and then spent a month (no exaggeration) buying and returning about 15 motor mounts because he kept looking at the wrong half of the mount and didn't know there's two parts to the mounts.

it is a total bitch to get to that dv....my buddy who i helped put his DV in his speed3 was laughing at me when i told him what a job the DV on an a4 was....then i got to laugh at him when it took him 6 hours to put in his front sway bar (you wouldn;t believe how hard that part is to install on a speed3)

moral of the story every car has thier problems

The DV is a pain, I just did mine 2 weeks ago (took me around an hour and a half)... but the nice thing is that with the right combination of tools (esp. the knuckle piece and 3" extension), there's no need to pay someone to do it. Feels great when it's done and you only had to pay for the actual part. I must have small hands, cause I didn't find the blind hole (top) all that difficult. A big thumbs up for doing it yourself!
