Lightbulb goodbye WRX, now on to S4!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I will be trading in my WRX for a 2001 S4 this week. To my knowledge the car is completely stock. My goal is to hook this thing up! In terms of speed and performance, what should I do first?!

    no you won't.

Welcome OP, the S4 is a significant step up. Start with software, move to suspension, brakes and then you can go K04s or bigger.
    My WTB List:

Stop! Go Back! Turn Around! Okay, just kidding, but seriously if you have the cash for maintenance + upgrades, then welcome to the club. However, the first thing you should do is check the following:

    1. Age/Miles of Timing Belt (only a rubber belt stands between you and brand new heads 4k-6K)
    2. Stickyness of 1st and 2nd gear (try and shift quickly and see if it hangs up on you, cause you'll have the faster car off the line but never, ever, win),
    3. Age of Turbos (only matters if you don't have the cash to upgrade now, if thats not an issue than get the most aggressive chip you can and drive them till their dead. An aggressively tuned K03 car can beat well tuned K04 cars in daily driving)
    4. Leaks from Auxiliary Water Pump (as far as I can tell this piece of equipment is useless but if it leaks you won't keep coolant in your system)
    5. Problems with ABS

That's my top 5 hit list of problems that will directly impact your enjoyment and your daily driving of this car. So if money is no object, then have these checked throughly first, cause as soon as you throw more power at this car, I GUARANTEE one of them will bite you.

As far as upgrades, that is entirely dependent on what your goals are. So use the SEARCH option alot. Trust me, all of your questions, have been asked before. Good luck

Come on guys, just like we love our grown up yet fruitful (In terms of power) Audis, once you own a Subaru there is always a part of us that will enjoy having owned a Subaru. But enough of that since after all, this is an Audi site.

PS: an Obvious one that is good to put on your list of upgrades is Exhaust, again though it's obvious

Recently sold my Turbo Legacy to get my S4. I love the rumble, but all of the other things associated with my S4 vastly outweigh it.

heres a suggestion... stay completely stock, skip stage 1-3- and start of all of your modding/upgrading to a stage 3 or 3+ with 605's or k04/RS6's.

and take a vid.. i wanna see the look on your face when you shit your pants..

Wow I was thinking about buying the 2011 sti after my stg 3 build after driving my friends. These things will nickle and dime you to death but worth every penny as soon push that peddle to the floor.

Congrats and welcome! I say you just start off with the basics; stage 1-2. No point in skipping out on that considering it's basic stuff that can still put a huge smile on your face until you go bigger. Then focus on some suspension and braking upgrades to make the car even more enjoyable to drive. Once those K03s give out or you get used to the power, pull the motor and slap on some K04s or bigger.

like emntioned before, look into what maintenance you can get done depending on mileage, records, etc... then chip it

That's not useless, once you replace the stock afterrun coolant switch. It's there for a reason, but Audi engineers (some of the dumbest smart people, it seems) seemed to be under the impression that normal operating temps of their motors would exceed 300*F on a daily basis...
