Those of you with a cone filter...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
What did you do to clean up the mess of shit in that area? I have searched through a few threads and cannot really see anything that either covers up that area or hides things too well.

Show me what you've got. While were on the topic, anyone running a K&N cone filter?

Are you thinking of just adding a cone filter to a stock inlet pipe setup?

2871R elim with 034 TIP and VR6 MAF. So more or less the stock setup, just bigger stuff, lol.

I am running the AEM dry flow filter Geoff and I love it. Reusable, no oils, no mess.

Mine just hung on the MAF, if i could do it again, which my new setup is a LOT different, but if I still had stock location like you do, i'd get soemthing like the EvoMS 90* elbow and fit a nice filter so its not facing backwards.

I used to just run mine connected to the MAF, but I guess some people just like using a U pipe or whatever

yeah, that filter geoff.. you cant buy the pipe alone from EvoMS.. you could check out vibrantperformance.com they have tight radius 90's you could probably double.. or just run it on the end of the maf.. problem with that is, the turbulent air that the MAF will see. Tapp's tunes have the biggest issues with that, which is why he went to the 4.2L 3.5" maf housing on his new tunes (630cc+)

Part of the reason I want to do this is because the 034 TIP is interfering with my headlights. I had the 1 piece lights fitting well on my 97 prior to installing it. I have braced the TIP on my PCV hard-line but I also bought a catch can so that hard line is not going to be there anymore. The stock airbox and 034 TIP are causing an issue, a cone filter would eliminate this but to me the area looks messy with a cone filter.

Also, there are 2 things in the top of the airbox: MAF connection and something behind it that simply seats into the airbox. What is that and can it just be set aside?

so you essentially want a "U" shape? I have heard that the MAF needs 4" of straight tubing before it in order to not experience issues with turbulent air.

its your ICM on top of the air box.

you dont need a U at all.. but a filter facing the air instead of the firewall is always better. :)

    of course :)

if i did do it that way does the 4" of straight in front of the MAF sound about right?

That makes sense. In building HVAC systems, airflow meters need a certain amount of straight duct before and after the sensor otherwise the readings can be greatly affected. This is the reason why I've avoided the EvoMS kit.

that's too big for that area... that's a 4.5" radius which is measured on the inside.. so outside to outside on that piece is like 10.5"

maybe just a 45* then...but the filter is like 6" long, not sure it will clear. i could leave some space after the MAF and install the filter directly after the bend.

^No, the only way I see to make that fit would be to have the corner immediately before the MAF which is exactly what everyone is saying is a bad idea.

i would ideally keep the stock snorkel up to the heat shield and seal the top off a la carbonio.

I went straight off the DIY on fourtitude, here's how mine ended up:

used a K&N and haven't had any issues with anything. Big ass filter though, kinda annoying when working in the area (blinktek heatshield too)

Just as a side note for those doing the cone filters, the ICM on the 97-99.5 1.8T's (AEB's) should always have a heatsink. The factory one is built into the top of the airbox (it's small, metal mounting area). If you remove the airbox you should hack out that piece or fab up another heatsink for it. The ICM is basically an amplifier. As such it needs adequate cooling or it will fail prematurely (at worst) or not work optimally (at best). Leaving it dangle about is not advised. Not so much for impact (it is a sold state device), but for lack of adequate heat dissipation.

    Just FYI.

    walky has a good knowledge......as always!~!!

when i removed my airbox, i used the thermal compound "artic silver 5" between the heat-sink & the ICM. the ICM is not cheap, IIRC the replacements are like $99 so make sure where ever you put your ICM, its getting some type of cool air.

just FYI there is no hacking needed, the heatsink comes right out of the rubber grommet, and then unscrews off of the ICM.

is the heatsink the portion of the ICM in the airbox that looks sort of like rows of fins?

Yep, as long as you have the heatsink on there, that is good. Preferably you want to place it where it will get some kind of airflow to it.

I did forget to mention about the thermal paste. There is some greasy stuff between the ICM and it's heatsink that is required. Don't clean it off. If anything you can replace it like thenofjboy did. Arctic Silver is great, but any CPU thermal compound is fine as well.

Thanks for the correction black99. I didn't realize it pops out. Good to know.
