Replaced battery and starter, car still won't start... any ideas?

    Hey everyone,

Been having an issue with my car abruptly not starting anymore. Full power with key on at accy, solenoids can be heard clicking. Once everything goes silent I try to start the car, silence. So I proceeded to replace the starter, successfully did that and no change to symptoms. no changes have been done to my car recently. just parked it at home over night and next morning no go. I have replaced the battery for giggles with no change.

    Thanks everyone.

What symptoms show bad ignition switch?

Apply 12V to the little wire that goes to the starter. If it cranks then you have the problem upstream. If it doesn't then check the ground cable to the motor, make sure you have 12V at the big wire/cable on the starter. If your starter has two small terminals for the small wire, make sure that your small wire is connected to the top terminal that is closer to the motor.

You need to find out why the signal isnt getting from your ignition switch to the starter. Possible break in the wire someplace, i am not familiar with the auto trans in our S4's, but there has to be some sort of lock out switch that will not let the car start unless its in Park or neutral, i would check a wiring diagram for one and start there.

I would suggest replacing everything before diagnosing it.

found starter wire runs to a brown plug with violet tabs under ECU. continuity from firewall plug to here is solid.

have also found starter wire has juice post ignition key with multimeter. there's a break somewhere in between the starter wire section directly under steering column to the harness connection in the ecu box.

any takers? i've tried to follow the wire path, but it disappears near the cluster

i wonder if the car ever had an alarm or starter kill in it at one time. The wires from the ignition switch run over the column, then down over to the fuse box. You should pull your culster out and the harness coming off the ignition is right there, see if it has previously tampered with. If they used a crappy connector you might be getting an intermitent connection.

it's repeated post like this that make me think it's only a matter of time before my number is picked. If you are running a s4 as daily driver with no backup you either have big balls, are too cheap to get a 2nd car as backup or both.

If i see one more post like this I'm reregistering my 2.slow

Take a length of wire, and attach one end to the starter reference wire, and the other to the positive 12V on the battery. If the car starts, you know that the ref wire is your problem. If so, check for power at that wire at the fuse box, then you'll know if the problem is pre, or post-fuse box. The more you can narrow down the problem area, the better.
