Shifter Went All Loosey Goosey, Car Won't Drive

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
-Car was driving fine when I parked it in the driveway

-Shifter goes all loosey goosey reverse is now first, but

-Car will NOT build rpm's in first gear while driving, it will also pop out of gear while driving, and i don't have reverse, but

-Engine revs just fine in neutral

-Pressure plate did make some strange, squeaky spring noises, (only happened once and recently)

-I readjusted the shifter 5+ times, no luck

    -I am running updated syncro's

So is it the RS4 pressure plate, the stock linkage or something else? Anything would be appreciated, thanks guys.

Sounds like when my RS4 PP "unsprung" itself.

I couldn't get it into any gear unless the car was off. Wouldn't go into reverse at all. Not exactly like yours, but My PP did start making noises before it all went to shit. Some throbbing through the clutch as well. I can't imagine what would cause reverse to become first or visa versa.

I had resistance going into second from first.. I was told my clutch is going, now I have to double clutch 2nd and 3rd for it to be alot smoother. Also my clutch pedal had been depressed all the way down, and i had to pull it back up to normal position.

^sounds like a slave cylinder issue if your clutch pedal is being "sucked" to the floor

This is what I had to get my goose went loose at the track. It had all of the same symptoms, except for the RPM issues you're having when in gear. My guess would be the linkage.

    Your shifter linked 'popped off'.

It's a ball and cup design (the old style). The newer style is all one piece.

Most definately the linkage. Had the linkage pop off on me once, not fun when you are in bumper to bumper traffic lol

^^Man I really hope it is just the linkage, that would explain why the car drove just fine before I parked it.

It would also explain why the tranny is just going into one... well more like 1/2 a gear as it doesn't drive for shit

I'll check it out, thanks guys

Just closing this thread. The cross rod bushing broke on the driver side.

I'm going to weld something up tomorrow, but first i have to get the passenger side disconnected from the tranny, has anyone done this, from what I remember one at least one of the sides is a pia to disconnect???

Ok so it is no problem to remove the 6mm allen on the passenger side if you drop the subframe almost all the way. I left 3 or so threads in each of the 6 18mm bolts on the front of the subframe and of course completely removed the 2 rear mounts

The trick for me was to remove the 10mm nut on on the driver side. To get at it more easily and in order to drill a larger diameter hole in the linkgage I removed the driver tranny mount(I was able to wedge it out, might be really tricky with larger dp's I just have piggies and it was tight) Once that was out of the way I was able to get some vicegrips on the top of the ball joint(all that was leftover from the broken bushing) and twist of the nut. I found it easiest to wrap one arm around passenger side of the tranny with the vicegrips and hit the nut with the other.

Thats it, time to fab something up.
