    ECU questions Car won't start.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Ok so before I go any further I'm sure I will be called a noob and be referred to the FAQ's. However I could not find anything sorry.

Ok so with that said I recently bought a s4 and had to replace the turbos and during the process I also purchased an ECU with a GIAC chip from ebay. So when I got everything together the car will not idle. I can start it and if I keep the throttle engaged it will stay running but a second or so after I release the throttle it will die.

Any ideas of what it might be?

Also I mentioned the ECU because when I bought it I sent the guy my ECU and got his with the chip on it. So I believe that I might have got the wrong box back. Like I need and A-box and I might have received another model box via an H, M, or T-box

Is there a way I can check this.
Also, could that be causing this problem?

    Thanks for any help.

Look at the top of the ecu there should be a series of numbers ending with a letter. That letter tells you what box you have. Also check all you hose connections.

yeah I noticed that a few minutes ago. The box is right but I believe that the ECU is bad and there is no chip either. So I got ripped off. Well that's the last time I buy anything from ebay. haha

    Thanks for the input though.

hopefully the new ECU will fix my problem.

Check your grounds and pressure test before you spend anymore money.

Check for error codes with VAG-COM.

When you connect with VAG-COM, what part number is displayed?

What GIAC chip is supposed to be in the ECU? Is it stage 1, stage 3, which injectors, which MAF, etc?

a friend of mine a has been working on it in a local shop. all he told me was the there was a code for the O2 sensors when he plugged his computer up.

as far as the ECU goes I contaked tge guy finally and he said that he flashed the ECU with the stock, 93, and 100 maps. however when I bought the ECU it was supposed to be chipped, but he said tge flash might not have stuck and is going to reflash it. does this sound like the problem and does this sound legit?

The engine is stock and ECU is supposed to be stage 2.

    thanks for any help.

I hope you didn't pay full price, because the guy you are buying from, is just selling you copies of a tune he has. He may even be using my free software to copy the ECUs. :P

If the flash that is on the ECU supports multiple maps, then there should be a way to switch between them. With GIAC you normally do this with a flash switcher USB cable, with APR you do it with the cruise control switches. Regardless, if the ECU is stage 2 then all of the maps should work, unless the ECU flash a security lockout mode. I think APR is the only tuner that provides a security lockout mode.

I would say test your car with a known working stock ECU, that way you know if it is your engine or the ECU.

Also, feel free to buy a $10 eBAY VAG-COM USB cable and use my free ECU flashing software to find out what was actually sold to you.

If you just want to use my flashing software, you can download the FTDI USB drivers I include with my software. If you are looking for any other software to use with the cable, I'm not sure where you find it.

If you use my software, you could read the ECU you have, then flash it back to stock and test that.

You also need to do a throttle adaptation with vag-com to have a proper iddle.

UPDATE: so I used the GIAC flashloader program and the files where on the ECU and everything look fine as far as I could tell.

Then I connected to VAG-COM but I am using the lite version with an eBay cable so I could not try the Throttle Body Adjustment (TBA) because the lite version was not able to do that, but I did scan for codes and got:

    P1122 - which was the o2 sensor
p1557 - It was something about sharware. I am assuming it is picking up the flashed files on the ECU? just my guess
    p1140 - same as above
p1612 - Main Power Supply - Voltage Too Low.

On the last one I just replaced the batterie so what else could this be referring to. maybe a connection?

Ok so now the car will start and idle fine no problems but as soon as I apply the throttle it is as if the car loses power and will die.

Any help as always is much appreciated.
    thanks.

Try disconnecting the MAF, and see if the car will run without the MAF. Large boost leaks can cause the engine to die.

I talk the guy that's been working on my car and the boost leak wasn't the problem but he has found a code that directed him to the exhaust temp. sensor. which when it goes off it sends more fuel into the engine to cool it down. So in my case there wasn't a problem just the sensor is bad or something like that, but it caused it to flood the engine. Which is what it sounded like but I did not assume that it could be possible.

So to recap this morning I would start the car and it would run fine but as soon as I would apply the throttle it would die which from what I stated above could be that wiht that sensor being bad or faulty there was already excess gas in the engine then when I was applying the throttle it was flooding the engine.

once again I hope this is the problem and this nightmare will be over with.

thanks for all the help and future help.
