    Lubromoly or Motul 8100

    Hey guys.
I searched different forums and I can't find if anyone has ever compared the two oils. Up until now I have been using Lubromoly 5w-40 and it's been running fine. It costs about $36 per 5 quart jug, which is somewhat reasonable for what is considered a good oil. Much better than the Mobil 1 oil it seems from all the tests reviews I have been reading. Anyways, a good friend of mine who owns an Euro auto repair shop started ordering large quantities of Motul 8100 Xcess oil and he can supply me with it for about $19 per 5 quart jug, about half the price of the Lubromoly. The Motul 8100 sells everywhere online for $47-50 for a 5 quart jug so I am definitely getting a good deal but is the oil better than the Lubromoly? I know Motul for their great gear oil and brake fluid but not too many reviews about their engine oil. I have their gear oil in my car and I can't complain but they are too different substances so one can be awesome and the other one complete crap, although I doubt that's the case here.
Right now I have 7 quarts of Lubromoly for my next oil change and also 7 quarts of Amsoil synthetic oil that I got to try out, even though it cost me $9 per quart. I am set for my next two oil changes but since I will be installing my brand new BW K04s to replace my crappy RP K04s I want to make sure I give the BWs the best oil in this price range, especially on priming and the initial start up with the first few thousand miles. I will probably use the Amsoil for that but want to stock up on oil for the future at this great price if it's worth the money.

I hope someone has tried these oils and can share some observations and impressions.

I'm going to help you out and post this on bob is the oil guy forums...They will help you out being that oil is what they know best!

Around here it's all opinion, but watch for their answers. They will be talking about where the oil comes from and stuff that you never even wanted to know about oil.

Thank you very much for doing that. A lot of responses in a short time for sure. I guess I should pass on the Motul oil for now, unless my friend can get me the X-max.

    Thanks again for doing this.

    Just saw this post.

The difference between X-CESS 5W-30 and X-MAX 5W-40 is the amount of additives making the X-CESS much better option, nevertheless both oils have type 4 API bases. I think the X-MAX 5W-30 is already out of the market however there's a new formula for the X-MAX 0W-40 but it hasn't been approved by AOA yet.

The X-CESS is an awesome oil, much better that lubro-molly synthoil which is nothing special but an expensive price tag.

Another option is the Audi Specific option from Motul, it's basically an X-CESS with more additives to comply with Audi standards, this is what I'm ussing at the moment, coming from Castrol Magnatec and Lubro-Molly I can tell you it's a whole new world at a very good price.

    A whole new world?

I'll be honest, I've been using LM 5W-40 for nearly 10 years now... I used it while i was living in Germany, and I've continued to use it on all my "good cars" here in Canada. None have ever given me an issue, none have felt better or worse then any other good oil out there (GC, Mobil, Motul, AMS Oil, etc) and a UOI on my 2.7t w/ LM verifies this.

So if you could please clarify why using your preferred oil is better then others that would be great, along with UOI's showing a difference.

    Hello Notorious:
Lubro-Molly synthoil 5W-40, which I think it's the one you've been running for the past 10 years, changed his formula like a year ago in order to comply new standards, it used to be a group 3 oil now it's a group 4. Motul X-CESS has been manufactured as a group IV oil and it's the only one made with esters technology, they have an specific oil as well wich complies with VW 502 standards.

FWIW I'm not saying Lubro-Molly is crap, I just wanted to point out that there are differences worth mentioning between Motul and others manufacturers.

BTW there IS a world of difference between group 3 and group 4 oils.

The European version of LM 5W-40 is Group IV based, while apparently in the US it's Group III (HC stock)... that said... my UOA was from 2 changes ago and had great results even then so I'm not too sure about them changing their formula especially since I can't seem to find any evidence supporting your claim on BITOG either.

    No problem.

As far as I know, esters technology has been patented by Motul, some other manufacturers claim to have the technology as well but they aren't exactly esters but additives that try to simulate the oil adherence, this will give you much lower wear on cold starts.

As I can see this the Motul is a much better oil specs wise, this is why...., I made a mistake about the Motul X-CESS, it is not group IV, it's group V (not a point of comparison with group III oils) so the bases from what the oil is made are much better, it means that it works better in severe heat, keeps viscosity under extreme conditions longer and has a higher TBN (controls corrosion better) this could extend the service interval without having to change the oil that often.

It doesn't mean other oils will blow your engine up, but with the X-CESS you will have lobger service intervals with better wear protection and a bit better performance.

Lubro-Moly. Use it in every car I work on and every car I own. Its constantly moving over here. Its a great oil. Castrol, Mobil 1 etc dont compare.

Motul I have no first hand experience with at this time but for the money and considering your car is not a race car Motul is really not needed IMO.

Motul has a race oil as well, unlike the x-cess the race one has double ester chain and it's not recomended for daily drivers. I'm not sure how expensive is Motul in the USA though.

You guys should give it a try, I'm pretty sure you will find surprising results between UOAs from both oil samples

I know that. Thats why I am saying I wouldnt put Motul in unless it is a race car. Their is nothing wrong with Motul but the price for the oil that you guys are talking about right now does not out weigh its benefits over Lubro-Moly. That is a fantastic oil.

You can get 7 quarts of the Motul X-cess 8100 and an oil filter from JHM for under $60

Was just going off the prices above. I have never looked into it as I have been happy with the performance of Lubro Moly, but then again I pay 5 a qt for it.
