So....Whats causing this? JHM short shifter owners or any short shifter owners...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So ever since the swap, and with the JHM trio package that was installed at the swap, I've been getting this weird vibrations at high RPM with my shifter...It is ANNOYING the SHIT out of me... Anyone with similar issues? Figures...the only thing my mechanic didn't touch, is the ONLY thing that is bugging me now...sigh.

Any clue what this could be? Here is a video....

BTW, don't mind me missing second....on one run...lol. Can't drive, shift, and video tape all at once...

Sounds like more of a clatter that might also have a corresponding vibration. My guess would be that there's a loose screw/bolt - maybe the once that hooks the shifter to the linkage or one of the four that secure the two rails. Take the boot and sound material out and drive with someone else looking down in there. You should be able to pinpoint it.

^ I agree. My JHM did not vibrate very much. Check the bolts.

I'll have to see. I'm just afraid its one of the delrin bushings or something to that extent...OR the transmission mount. But i figured either one would cause it to vibrate constantly not RPM dependent. Any other suggestions?

i think it might not be adjusted properly because from the looks of it when you go into first the trim pushes up a little bit.. if so then you would def need to back up the shifter a bit and also X2 on the loose bolts my shifter does not rattle at all.

forgot about the shifter, he retorqued the trans to the block, but didn't take the clutch out physically... So hopefully thats all good.

I had the 034 tranny mount and it caused a vibration as it causing a vibration as it was too thick (made for a B5) and pushed a lower cradle into the exhaust.

The Delrin bushings will make this stiffer and transfer a tiny bit of vibration to the shift knob but not like that.

I would check the bolts in the shifter mechanism to make sure they are all screwed down tight.

I definitely say something internal is causing a vibration inside the trans that's transferring. Did you check the snub mount? Might not even be related, but I remember when I did mine and it was rubbing I got some rad vibration from the knob.

Check to see if the bolt that holds the shifter rod via the delrin bushing to the transmission housing is loose or not.

Might be a good idea to go for a drive with the shift knob/boot removed. not the easiest thing in the world but you might be able to see whats vibrating a little more clearly. also check the other end of the shift rod on the transmission to see if anything has come loose. otherwise like AudiA4Turbo22 said it might be internal to the trans. I have a JHM with abosolutely no vibration.

I actually decided to take the whole short shifter unit out...shook it here, shoot it there...didn't hear anything either...started the car without the shifter and reved it up to see if i can replicate the sound...NONE. Put the shifter back in to and re adjust everything...sound is there again. So 99% chance its from the shifter. Going to see if i can find a 6 speed shifter somewhere and swap it out to see if it is the culprit. If not, guess something is fubared with my trans....Sigh. I'm crossing my fingers it isn't...

When you reinstalled the shifter was the knob put on or not?

If the noise was without the knob installed I'd check the big circlip to make sure it is holding everything down tight.

Is everything under the car connected? There is some more linkage down there that may be rattling. Although it would probaly cause quite a bit of slop if they were loose.

I drove the car without the knob....it was still there...sadly. It was hard for me to drive, and look where the ratttling is at night especially.

    fcvk.

I just noticed something else that wasn't installed in your car.

There is a bracket that attaches to those two 10mm nuts just behind the shifter box. Those nuts actually bolt the shifter box to the chassis. The bracket is an additional support bracket for the center console. I'll mail you one.

You should already have it in your car. It is not specific to the manual shifter box.
