Average miles on a tank is 200-220, should I be worried?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Every time I fill up my tank, I would reset my distance and see how many miles i get per tank and im only getting 200-220 miles. 85% of the time I do not rev past 3k rpm and im in D(s-tronic). my commute composes of 60% highway and 40% city driving. On a few tanks I have put it in D and let it shift before 2k rpm and try to squeeze out the most gas I can but the most i got was 223 miles. Im a little worried that something is wrong, seeing that some guys have said they get 280-300 miles to a tank. two questions: 1) what are your distance per tank and 2) should i be worried?

Hmm, indeed my average is 280-300 miles per tank. How many miles you have in the odometer?

This sounds weird - with that sort of mixed economy I would think you would get way better mileage than that, that's around 14 mpg.

Mine really started getting better mileage after 5K miles, though I never got this low mileage. Do you have ADS or Sport Diff? If so are you driving in Auto or Dynamic?

Haha...yes a lot. The increase in throttle response and holding higher RPM's keep it in the edge of the boost, greatly increasing fuel consumption.

Depends on how empty your tank is, when you fill it. Mine generally gets fuel at about 220-230 miles and takes 12.5 gal, ~1800 miles. So about 17-18 mpg, dynamic DSG.

I drive in dynamic majority of the time. 90percent+ city driving. I get close to 400km in a tank (I fill up close to when my car tells me to fill up)

480 Km here. Auto most of the time. occasionally i put it in S and drive it hard. 50% city driving/50% highway.
Only have 2000 km in total so, once i broke it in properly i hope to see 500+ km on 1 tank.

What i noticed is that the fuel consumption is about 6-7 liters/ 100km on the highway @ 130 km/h, which is nice.
But i also noticed even when i feather the gas from a dead stop it rockets to 22 liters/100km(on full gas fogetaboutit, more like 50+ liters/100) making the average fuel consumption higher then i would like. But then again, these care are obese.

500 plus km driving in full manual Stronic, 70% highway. I now have 26,000 km on the car. The mileage has improved somewhat. I drive her hard as my gas is paid for by my employer. So you should be seeing 300 plus miles if you are driving it sanely.

Wow, I fill up around a 1/4 tank and i have about 200 miles to that tank. I drive almost always in dynamic and like to get on the throttle quite often, but the highest mpg I have seen is 15. Sometimes i get around 13. I have a DSG with ADS package. I have 4600 miles on the car. The best I have seen for highway travel is 20mpg. I guess looking at others I am actually getting poor milage. I traded in my Range Rover Supercharged for the S4. So I was used to 9mpg.

Yeah, I drive in "Comfort" mode all the time now just to preserve some sort of dignity at the pumps. Im still getting only about 19.5 mpg mixed and 300 miles on a tank. When I went to the track and finally put it in Dynamic mode after about 3 months of Comfort, it was like a shot of adrenalin. I forgot how fast this car could be.

My range varies a lot. I can get around 350km to over 500km. I don't fill up til it is in the last section (close to the red part) since I am lazy. I drive mostly city in D (Auto), occasionally I switch to manual and I also have a tendency to randomly push my car up to 80-100 km/hr for no reason. I drive highway on weekends, but even on highway, I am in manual mode and pushes as much as I can (got to stay under 150km/hr or risk impounding) so I am not sure how much highway improves my mileage.

During the week I drive my car in what I think is pretty bad conditions. That is about a 5 mile drive in the morning and then run errands in the afternoon and come home. I rarely hit the freeway on weekdays. I am averaging 220-250 a tank and I wouldn't say I am always on it but once its warmed up, I use a little more throttle. I have gotten 300 out of a tank easily though with some freeway driving.

This is what I was seeing and is typical. I have DSG and no SD. If I leave it in "D" and just take it easy I get about 250 miles out of a tank in traffic. I've posted in several threads.... not sure how some of these people are getting such high mileage other than it's because of the Ethanol blends we have here in Texas.

Defining the gas mileage based on how many miles one gets from a tank is not a solid benchmark, since people fill the tank at different levels of emptiness. I fill with around 12.5 gallons, others may fill closer to the edgeof empty, such as 15 or more gallons.

My S4 is a 6MT with 3k miles on the clock. I recently did a 1,200 miles trip through Colorado and averaged 25.4 mpg. The driving composed of 75% highway, at speeds between 55 - 80, and 25% stop & go for photos, checking out small towns and visitng National Parks. All of the journey was over 5,000 feet in elevation with a number of mountain passes over 10,000 ft. I drive in "Comfort" mode on the straight bits and through the cities and in "Dynamic" for fun in the twisty parts. I normally shift at 4,000 rpm but will take it to 5,5000 when needed - or for fun. There was a lot of full throttle acceleration to pass all those RV's out there. At a consant 75 mph I get about 27 mpg; at 60 mph it jumps to about 32 mpg. Around town with lots of stop and go and short driving distances the fuel numbers are terrible; closer to 17 mpg - but just a short jaunt on the open road brings that number up quickly.

I use Shell no ethanol in their 91 octane. I avoid any petrol with ethanol. I cant believe some of you guys actually drive your car in D/comfort, what is the point of that? Why not drive an A4 if you are concerned with mileage?

When I am in stop and go traffic, do I need to move ahead the next 8 feet REALLY FREAKING FAST? No.
When I have my family in the car, do I need to go to the grocery store FRN, nor would my family appreciate it.

I find this incredibly sensitive to how it's used; more so than any I've owned before. When I feel like pushing economy I can get up to 24 mpg on my commute, or down to 18 if mood and opportunity coincide. Leave the dsg in comfort and it rarely gets north of 2000 rpm. On an 1800 mile trip Boston to Boone, NC it got 28 mpg with 2 people, luggage, AC and 10 mph over. So the car can hit the EPA numbers, but it's way more fun not to.

Really depends on how you drive. Two days on the track and I averaged 7 miles per gallon (33L/100km) with Shell 91 Octane.

Does anyone know if the boost bleed valve operates at different levels depending on how much you are into the throttle? IE if you are lightly on the gas is the charger venting all the boost back to the intake tract.

The reason this becomes important is determining if driving for economy is more similar to a turbo charged car(boost soley dependent on pedal position) or more like a NA car.

If boost is vented based on pedal position then the same turbo charger rules of thumb apply. In general it's much better to be in a lower gear with higher RPM as you are able to accelerate without use of boost. This means letting the car shift into 6th gear at 30 mph may not be the most efficient way to drive. I know that with my 2.0t I get better mileage out of manual mode than I do in D.

Dude, don't knock people for driving sensibly (gas wise). You don't pay for gas so you might not care but others might.

"Comfort" mode is awesome. I haven't driven an S4 without Audi Drive Select so I can't compare on the handling dynamics. Driving around town I appreciate the more gentle throttle tip-in and the softer ride. Living in Colorado and within minutes of wonderful mountain roads I spend a lot of time in "Dynamic." Actually I use the "Individual" mode and set ther steering at "Comfort" and everything else at "Dynamic." At a track-day is the only time I used the car in full "Dynamic" mode.

Im a little worried that something is wrong, seeing that some guys have said they get 280-300 miles to a tank. two questions: 1) what are your distance per tank and 2) should i be worried?
Im averaging the same as you and Im around 4000 Kilometres now.

My gas is a taxable benefit therefore I pay tax on personal use so I do care about mileage. I found the comfort setting had zero steering feel so I prefer dynamic. Anyway enjoy your ride.
