For those in the NorthEast on Stasis SS or Ohlins SL Coilovers

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm in Buffalo, NY and my mechanic is discouraging me from getting coilovers because of corrosion issues (from sand and rock salt being spread everywhere) other customers with coilovers have had during the winters up here. Are Stasis SS coilovers or the Stasis Motorsport (Ohlins) coilovers an exception to these issues? Can anyone who lives in heavy wintery areas comment please? Otherwise I'm getting KONI Sport (yellows)/Eibach Pro kit

you'll be fine, just put some anti-seize on the threads every few months and make sure you wash under your car so that the salt doesn't build up. Im from parsippany too, my boy has a black b7 and I have a black b6, maybe you've seen us around

Your mechanic is an idiot...find a new one.....stock suspension is probably more beleivable to rust first than aftermarket shocks and coils

sounds like your mechanic is an audi purist. may be good for normal servicing, but not your aftermarket needs. i know many great techs like that.

get the coilovers, and coat the entire thread in anti-seize. Take the spring perches/collars and spin them up and down the entire length of the threads. set them to the height you want. install in car, you'll be fine.

He is an Audi purist indeed, and a tuner as well. He does tracking events in his spare time...and is just speaking from the experience of other customers. Weather gets really really bad up here in the winter, and he's not the first person i have heard this from. corrosion during the winter is a known issue on many coilovers in fact. I was just wondering if the Stasis CO's are an exception.

i'mma gonna say that he's talking about the threads getting gunked up with road crap/salt, etc... unless you wanna pull them off every season and re-lube (grease, anti sieze, whatever) either 1) don't adjust them and assume the resale value is gonna be shit or 2) adjust them and prepare to get dirty, often.

I've siezed more than my share of coilovers and that was in northern Florida.

that's exactly what he's talking about. I don't care about resale value because i don't plan on selling them. I never plan to adjust them because i would hope that the preset stasis setting is practical enough to be used year-round....i don't plan on intentionally driving into snow or anything. i don't care about them getting dirty. i DO care about them corroding and if they are more susceptible to that than a spring/shock combo, then i will not get them.

just because the coilovers are stainless steel wont mean they wont corrode. Maybe im unlucky but my magnaflow 16601 which is supposed to be "stainless" is rusted up as fuck under the car.OP, I graduated from Par High in 08, did you go to the hills?

This. The shock body won't corrode, you'll just need to keep them clean. If you end up deciding on the Stasis coils, let me know :-)

Then what do you care? The only part that would seize (If not maintained) is the threads that allow you to adjust the ride height. I've run coilovers through PA winters on a few cars and I just make a habit of rubbing marine grease/anti-seize on the threads whenever I have the wheels off. Never had an issue.

I care simply because I want to have full functionality of the shock for maybe that ONE day that i will grow a pair and go to the track.

I did some digging and found that this is indeed a known issue for the StreetSport COs.

    FYI: http://forums.audiworld.com/showthre...w#post14282899

Also FYI, the PSS9/10s supposedly have Bilstein's patented Triple-C coating to ensure long-lasting resistance to corrosion. They also are much more expensive than the SS COs.

*edit* don't mean to state the obvious, but for those of you who don't know, it seems like corrosion is not an issue for the Ohlins SL either

You'll be fine with whatever you choose as long as you use some kind of protectant on the threads.

Yes it seems like that is the only preventative solution to this. I'm really looking for a long-term worry-free solution. I'm either just gonna save up for Ohlins SLs or Koni Sport/Eibach Pros
