Angry Cats on cars...anyone with successful remedies?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Walked out to my car this morning to see some nice muddy cat tracks all over the hood and roof

Called animal control and they said if the cat is registered, they are allowed to roam.

    They said my options are:

    1. Rent a cat trap and put it next to the car. They will come pick up the cat. Then the owners can come pay to bail them out. But then the cat returns home and we are back to square one.

    2. Use some sort of liquid that will keep cats away from the car. Anyone have any good ideas for this?

    3. Use an ultrasonic sound deterring device.

Anyone ever dealt with this, or have suggestions on how to? Looking for something inexpensive, yet effective...if that's possible. Google gave me some good ideas, just wondering if anyone has been successful at this.

happens to me but i never really cared enough enough to even worry about it.

just try and find the owner and talk to them about it; suggest they get an electric fence or kill it or something

I've spoken with the owner, there's really nothing they can do...cats are allowed to roam. There's no way of blocking off the area I park in.

I can always take the owner to small claims to repaint my hood...but I'm not really interested in that right now.

There are multiple cats that roam, so I need to be proactive in protecting my car.

They only get on the car in the middle of the night...I need a remedy that will keep them off the car when I'm not around.

Anyone ever found something that works? There are plenty of liquids online, but I don't want to just spend a lot of money on things that aren't proven to work.

My neighbor's cat sleeps on top of my car at least once per week. Matted fur on the sunroof glass and muddy streaks down the windshield.

If it keeps him from being harassed by the other cats, I'm fine with it. He's a nice cat.

In fact, he helped install my FMIC.

I don't mind cats either, but I do have a problem with it. My hood is getting scratched badly...I just had this car painted less than 6 months ago!

that would be my idea but their claws could puncture it??
Moving cloth laid over at night would be least expensive choice for the moment though.

rumor has it crushed red pepper works. Pour the pepper around your car, and sprinkle on the spots where the cats sit. It may take a few days but eventually the cat will lick the pepper off of itself while on your car and eventually associate fire mouth with your car.

I read this in some home remedy book. I have not tried it yet.

Im not sure if you have access to a hose but at our family cottage the deer eat everything you plant. So we have this sprinkler thats hooked up to a motion sensor and it will do a full sweep pass if anything sets it off. 3 years later garden stays nice!

I say wax your hood so much that the cat can't stand on the hood without falling off, or you could call that girl of your dreams and get a house w/ garage w/her. ;)

    Thanks for the advice Scotty.

I'm not spending hundreds of dollars to 3m my car...and I'm not washing my car every night so I can put some type of cloth/cover on it. Automated sprinkler/hose is an option, but I'll try some inexpensive things first.

Found out Ace hardware has 'Shake Away' granular cat repellent made from wolf/coyote urine. They said I should make a few balls out of nylons and place them around the car each night.

I'll give it a shot...and if that doesn't work, red pepper it is

No sprinklers or hoses you will just get water spots all over your paint. I would say car cover or some form of liquid designed to deter cats.

^^Problem with this method is the cat might scratch the car trying to scramble away.

The problem with the car cover is that you have to wash your car every time you put it on. Otherwise the dirt can be rubbed right into the paint maybe making it worse then before. Also has anyone took a cover off a car after it rains? You get wet, and you don't want to put the cover back in the car or house while wet.

    +1 on the water idea.

The neigborhood cats used to love my old car when I lived in FL. I first asked the owners (who had like 20 cats...no lie) to manage their cats as they were sitting on my car and scratching the paint. The "Cat Lady" basically told me it was my problem, not hers. So, I would patiently wait for the cats to sit on my car, quietly sneak up on them, and soak them w/ a giant cup of water...worked wonders. The cats learned and stopped sitting on my car.

Then I moved to a place w/ a garage and solved the problem 100% - I recommend the same!

DO NOT DO THE WATER!!! What do you think a cat does just before it has to run away from something? It puts it rear claws as deep as they can go before hauling ass the way they want to go. So do you really want that to happen to your paint. Try it out with a friends cat and a little spray can and see how it feels. Plus you are just going to water spot the car like crazy causing more damage to the car.

Put out the cat trap and catch the cat. Have animal control pick it up. If the owners pay to get their cat back, repeat until they either keep their cat inside all the time or stop paying to bail their cat out.

I put my car cover on my car everyday and it sits outside. Clean or dirty the paint fairs just fine. Rain and all.

You must keep the car clean! I would guess that you never put the cover on a dirty car since you keep the cover on it all the time.

I'd try ammonia and/or black pepper around the car. I know ammonia works very well for dogs... not sure about cats.

I would also consider buying a big ass dog and some cat nip...

How about a motion sensing frog that croaks when anything gets close? My sister is a prankster and hid one of these in the bushes next to my front door. It scared the shit out of me.

So does this mean you'll be spraying wolf/coyote urine all over your car? Wouldn't that leave some nasty spots? Isn't urine acidic?
