    Abrupt CEL? Advice please!!!

So this morning (crisp 52 degrees in southern cleveland), I start my car before heading on my 30 mile commute to work when I notice that the CEL has came on. It drove fine last night from work around 8pm, had no troubles starting up this morning, and did not sound off during my ride into work just now. On top of that I just had an oil change & service two weeks. So what in the world could be causing my CEL??? I have a 2000 A6 2.8Q with ~158,200 mi. I know its impossible to tell with this little information, but does anyone have any ideas at all what could be up? Thanks in advance.

Just go out autozone or advancedauto and have them read the code. They'll usually do it for free. Then search for the code here.

Relying on auto parts stores to interpret codes

You know, I have a problem with this. When the person at the autoparts store uses a hand held code reader (not scan tool) to pull a code and interpret it to tell you that a part is necessary without the ability to check it's current functioning, when the error had occurred or the ability to reset it and check it again.

I can tell you that I, as a mechanic, would not blindly replace a part with out due diligence. Don't get me wrong, there are some pretty smart guys working at some of these places, and I may have come to the same conclusion, however, there are several codes referring to the O2 sensors that may be the sensor or something else...

Kind of like asking the pharmacist to prescribe medicine. Could be right...

Sit Down, take a look at it, take it apart, and FIX it!

Agreed. I had a code throwing all my O2's. Turns out it was only the rears that were bad. My VAST tune deleted the rears and now no CEL at all. Fronts are good to go... basically saved me a couple hundred dollars...
2000 A6 2.7MT - currently gutted, a few parts left, PM me if you need anything.

Siricospeed great point, and some sound advice. Thank you. I haven't gotten around to doing anything about it yet, been too busy with work and whatnot. I will be sure to check it out first before throwing money down the drain on already functioning parts.
