VAG COM installation HELP, already searched this...Please help.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Ok, so I decided to buy a vag com cable from ebay for $20. I'm trying to install it both windows 7 and windows xp but it won't connect when I click on TEST. The pc seems to recognize the cable though. The cables also came with vag 401 and I also downloaded VAG 704 a cracked version of it. Installed both version and tried on both OS's and it still won't connect to the car. I don't know if it's the cable or the software. Please help, I searched this up already.

Got to device manager and find out what the com port is. You need the FTDI driver to make it work. Usually included on a little cd with the ebay cables, but you can get it from the ftdi website as well (virtual com port driver).

Make sure drivers are install and working properly. Device and software/vag-com com port must match to work. FYI, vag com don't seem to work with 64bit operation system.

Is the cable connected to the car? Else you will never find the "Interface".

Thanks for replying guys, I just figured out that you need to install FTDI in order for the ports to be recognized. ( Thanks Talky). Should it work better on Windows 7 or Windows XP? Will the cables work on VAG v. 704 that I downloaded?

For the ebay cables you want the new "vag-com lite" from ross-tech's website. I've always had the best luck with windows xp. The newer versions have too much crap for a simple diagnostic laptop, but you can make it work with some fiddling (ie: admin account, run as administrator, etc).

On ross-tech's site, I know that I have to download VCDS-lite but which interface do I download?

    I don't understand your question.

    - You go to www.ross-tech.com
    - Click "Download/Update" at the top of the page
    - Click "VCDS Lite" on the right side of the page
    - Scroll to bottom of page and click the download button
    - Install the software

The "Interface" you are talking about is your "car", if it's not plugged into your car, you will never have an Interface.

I have the driver if you need one, pm and I can email it to you. I also modified the driver to work with a bluetooth vag cable which I have been using. I've been in the process of writing an app for the ipad and bluetooth obd2 devices. Anyhow right now I've been using my vag com by remote connecting to a virtual windows os on my mac in my office. It works like a charm.

Also you should buy the full version. Otherwise your cracked version will only be as good as a demo version unless you write a batch fille to come the d1-d3 bin files at a 1 second interval from another location.
    Hooray for boobies!

It won't work 'cause of the drivers. I was stuck on this for a while but download the drivers and just drag and drop the icon onto the USB port in device manager and it'll install them for you (in Windows XP, can't say for any other OS).

Ok so I partitioned my hdd to run on 2 OS, one for win7 and winxp. In xp, I just plug in the cable to the pc and it'll detect the cable then install driver right away? It seems like its not detecting anything.....

For XP you have to manually install the drivers. I tried for so long to have it detect and install them automatically - it does not work. Just download the drivers and drag and drop the icon on the USB port in the device manager window. That will install the drivers. That's how I got it to work when all else failed.

you wasted your time and space by partitioning your hard drive. any version of VAG-com works fine on Windows 7. And if you had issues you could just change the compatibility mode to XP.

Well, the reason why I partitioned because I wanted to use win7 for school, but heard that the cracked vag com that I downloaded works well on xp, I don't know if that's true or not. The cables are from ebay, not the original rosstech cables...would that make a difference?

look around for vag-com 409.1, seems like its the last version that is stable with the fdti based cables. (torrent sites-dont get a virus lol) most of the time with win7 vag-com wont 'see' the ftdi port because the drivers were not written for windows 7. they might be compatible, but not written specifially for it.

and fwiw, the fdti drivers do not work well with 64-bit windows 7 (even with compatibility mode) due to the digital signature enforcement. there is a workaround with the dseo (driver signature enforcement overrider) software and test mode but its still hit or miss at best. 32bit windows its doable.

I made a 80gb partition on my laptop to run win7 for school and winxp for vag-com and etka/elsa and runs without a hitch (32bit winxp).

Search for the cracked version of vcds-lite. It works perfectly with win 7. Although your anti-virus will think the crack is a virus, well any crack for that matter.

409.1 won't work with win7 even in compatibility mode.

I have tried everything discussed here and other threads - This is what I have - http://scantool.imechatronics.com/va..._interface.htm

I have Windows Vista - the cable appears as recognize in the device manager, still Vag-COM won't communicate with it - what's wrong?

It has worked fine for me on Win7. When you are selecting ports, pick #3. That's what worked for me.

I'm having this same issue. 409.1 will not even start up. The drivers for the cable say they are installed and working properly. I have windows 7 64 bit. Tried compatibility settings and the program will not open. Thoughts?
