    Wheels rub on new brakes

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I posted this in the wheels section too but I dont think it'll get much traffic there....
    I have a 2001 S4 Avant

Ok So I have a set of 18x8 ET45 RS4 reps. They have 235/40 Michelin PS2's on them. I just put on some new Adams rotors with Akebono Euro ceramics.

All sounds good except....With my old brakes I would rub a little bit if I hit a big dip in the road. on the drivers side it looks like it rubbed on the suspension (rub marks are on the inner 1/3 of the tire. On the passenger side it looks like it rubbed on the fender (rub marks on the outer edge).

With my new brakes the front wheels wont turn now. Crap!

One would think I need spacers (maybe 5mm) but if I get spacers wont my previous rubbing be even worse?

    Thanks for the help.

that blows. same thing happened to me. my problem was, wheel was too small for the calipers. and they rubbed along the insides of the rims.

When you install new pads they push the calipers closer to the wheel spokes. And since you have et45 not 35, your spokes contour closer to the caliper than recommended. It's surprising you were even able to get the wheels bolted on. I recommend shaving down the face of the calipers in order for there to not be any rubbing, or shaving down the pads a little bit. The more mileage there is on the pads, the farther the calipers move from the spokes.

just put some spacers on.. if they dont rub much at all get 3mm to 5mm. if the wheel doesnt move at all if the car rolls forward. get 5mm to 8mm.. and be done with it. you will have a nicer stance.

in my opinion, i wouldnt "shave" down anything... that sounds like a ghetto and stupid way to fix this.. you just purchased new pads. so ur goin to shave em down??? watttt the fuuuuu? and to me the brakes are 1 of the most important parts of a car.. y would u touch a caliper? just add some spacers. you might have to get longer lug bolts.

my advice is find a friend who has 5x112 spacers. in the 1mm to Xmm sizes and ask to put them on ur car for a few minutes to see wat size you can get away with.

you can put 1mm thick washers on the lug bolts to measure what size spacer u are going to need.

    Fingers crossed!.

I had the same issue, so I got my fenders rolled, and then ground a bit off my brakes. No spacers, no rubbing. Perhaps a bit ghetto. If I did not have stock brake calipers I might not have done so. Have not had a problem since.

Shaving calipers isn't a big deal unless you go apeshit on them. I prefer spacers myself though because it also pushes the wheels out a bit, giving you a better stance.

i had to grind my brakes alot and i still had to use a 15 mm spacer dont be afraid to grind them just get grinder and keep grinding wheel flat i think its looks nicer also geting the nasty casting line out. make sure your use cover on your car the sparks will settle on the clear coat then rust.

Not at all. Just don't grind an assload off. Plus it gives you a reason to paint them too.

5mm spacers and a 2mm grind did it, Looks good. You can barely tell its ground. I just did the middle 3" of it where the spoke hit and it tapers to the original edge. Need to get some paint though. thinking black but may do a bright silver to match the car and contrast the black wheels.
But first things first, I need to re bleed the system....still a bit mushy.
