    ?? with Coilovers

    Hey guys,

I know this topic has been discussed to death and I have searched for the answer to my one specific question, but have had no luck. My B6 is my daily driver that I drive into NYC. I am planning on doing coilovers (probably KW V1's) and I have an USP (sport suspension) and have already added an RS4 rear sway. I know that I will be able to adjust ride height and that ride quality will be pretty similar to stock, but my one question that I'm would like answered is - how much better will my car be with cornering? I felt a nice improvement with the rear sway and wondering how much more of an improvement will I see with coilovers when it comes to cornering. Will body role be significantly reduced?

If the main benefit I will get with CO's is my stance, I will probably do without them....I will pull the trigger, if I will get a significant improvement in cornering.

    Let me know...thanks in advance.

Yeah...I came across your thread yesterday when searching for the answer to my question above....sorry to hear about your experience. Have you gotten them on your car yet? If so, how significant is the improvement in cornering? Also, were/are you currently on stock or sport suspension?

I do have them on my car.

I cannot comment on how they are vs. sport suspension. I know they were definitely better than my non-sport (the shocks were shot).

My personal take (as in if I were to do it again), I wouldn't get a set of coils unless you had more adjustment options than just ride height. All in all I think most shocks will give you the same ride as a basic coil dampener and the springs are probably pretty on par with what you can get from companies like H&R. You can get more options with a spring/shock combo for less than most coils start at.

I'd look at something with adjustable dampening as well if you want to spend the money on a set of coils. From what I've seen, most people dial the ride height with coils to a pretty similar height you get from most spring/shock combos. Is the option to fine tune the ride height worth the extra $400 or so? Not really. And with that being said, unless you're an avid track goer or do a ton of "spirited" driving, I don't know if I'd find an expensive set of coils with dampening adjustability worth the $800 over a set of springs and shocks.

It really comes down to your driving habits. I like twists and turns, but with my car (a 3.0 as well) if I were to do it all over again I would stick with a spring/shock combo and spend the money saved on the RS4 rear sway. The height adjustment just isn't worth the extra money (because the STs have shit for adjustment options) and I couldn't swallow an additional $800 to be able to adjust my dampening.

But that's just me. I'm sure someone has a better reason why you should go with coilovers, but thus far my stance is that a spring and shock combo will serve you just fine for daily driving and save you a lot of money.

your best bang for the buck as far as improvement the overall suspension would be to leave the USP springs and get a set of Koni yellow sport shocks to replace the factory ones. you will improve both the ride quality and the cornering ability if you set the shocks right. I like about 40 to 50% on the fronts, 25 to 40 % rears depending on your driving style and how bad the roads are. by the way, it does take about 1000 miles or so for the Konis (and most other shocks) to break in to where they are operating as smoothly as they will be, so hold judgment until you get a few miles on them if you decide to take my advise and go for the konis..

Thanks for the input guys. I'm kind of torn because I've read many posts where guys say definitely go with coils, as just doing springs will wear on other parts. I haven't researched enough about doing a spring and shock combo, but don't want to create other issues, as this is my daily driver. I don't track the car, but I do like to drive aggressively often and do take my share of spirited drives. I'll look more into the Koni's shocks, but wondering if I went with KW V2's would that be the right path, since I would be able to adjust dampening.

Decisions, decisions....I guess I need to do more research, but if anyone else has any input/opinions, please chime in....thanks!

It sounds like you can adjust the Koni Yellow Sports. If that's the case, get a set of those and some springs, a RS4 rear sway and call it a day.

If you go with coilovers or any aftermarket (ie stiffer) springs, your ride quality will only be close to stock on smooth roads, on bad roads the ride will be much harsher. I love my Stasis coilovers, but I live in the suburbs where roads are great. Everytime I drive into the city (DC) I realize just how harsh the ride can be when the roads are bad. If I had to drive into the city, or on bad roads, everyday...I'd still be running the stock USP suspension.

I definitely don't want the ride to be much harsher on city roads - I did connect with another AZ member who has KW V1's and he said ride quality on bumps is pretty much the same.

Greedo...can you comment on the above?

I think any time you get a lowered suspension you will encounter a bumpier ride over rough terrain. When you lower the suspension you are creating a shorter distance for it to travel; this means when you hit a bump it's going to hit harder since the shock has less distance to move about and absorb the impact.

I haven't been over too many bumpy roads with my coils yet, but it is a bit stiffer of a ride than my non-sport suspension.

    Hey guys,

Sorry for the repost - I posted this in one of my other threads, but meant to post here. I ended up getting Koni Sports (Yellows) with Eibach Pro springs and got them installed yesterday. All I can say is that I love the way it came out! Ride height is exactly where I wanted it, ride comfort is even better than stock was - takes bumps much better...not as harsh, but with a more cushioned feel; cornering has improved and car is much more planted! Here are some before and after pics:
