    Banjo Bolt and Barbed Fitting

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am in search of a 12x1.5 banjo bolt and a barbed fitting for my fuel pump. They must be in Canada, or ship quickly. I do not want to order from 034 tunning due to the Issam issue. 034 will not recieve any of my business - does anyone have any suggestions? I cannot find this locally.

What did you have to modify though? The 040 goes right in with very little effort. The hardest part for me was getting the old one out.

yeah, I had to use the same screw driver method that you did to get the basket out. I didn't have to modify much of anything.

You need just the banjo fitting, right? I assume you already have the M12x1.5 cap? What size hose are you using?

I do not have the "cap" I need the bolt and than I can get a 12mm barbed fitting anywhere locally. Those are dime a dozen. Just need this 12x1.5 bolt. :(

What pump are you trying to work with? The Bosch 044 look like this with a threaded shaft coming from a check valve that doesn't require a "bolt."

The 044, you remove the 12mm, and put in a 12mm banjo so it fits in tank

Ah, I see. Didn't realize you had to remove the check valve to get the 044 to fit.

Make sure you get a check valve to put inline on the hose you connect to the banjo or all the fuel will drain back in tank and you will be cranking your car for 10 seconds every time you go to start it. You can see mine down in there to the left of the pump (the silver thing).

I'm not sure if you need the banjo fitting also, but it's easy to make a banjo bolt in a pinch. Just drill a 12mm X 1.5mm thread bolt on ~center line through the shank of the bolt, but not all the way through the head of the bolt. Then, cross drill the bolt twice, at 90 degree angles, aligning the cross drillings to align at the horizontal center line of the banjo fitting. De-burr the holes. Viola! You now have a banjo bolt. You need to use a drill press with a drill press vice and a 6 mm drill plus a 5 mm drill for the cross drillings, or similar sized SAE drills. Or use the largest drill bits that don't weaken the bolt to much, for maximum flow. Also, pay attention to the ID of the barb fitting, you may want to over drill the ID size of the barb to avoid restricting the fuel flow.

Check at a Diesel Fuel injection specialist shop for a banjo bolt, or have a machine shop make one. It should not cost much. It's an option depending on how much of a hurry to get done.

Why are you guys going with the 044 over the 040? I would understand if it was less expensive, but I thought it was actually more expensive and it doesn't fit as nicely.

It fits just fine, identically to the 040 actually. They use the identical basket, you only have to file/grind down the little ring on the pump a little so it slides in to the basket. Not to much though so it fits in and holds tightly, then cut the bottom threaded piece off pump for if it was being ran inline so the pump will clear the filter on the bottom of the basket. That takes a few minutes and is simple, and it IS less expensive going the 044 route and you have a much better pump for flow if you are planning on big power.

You can get an 044 for $170-$200 if you look around or buy from ebay. Then you have Pump Cradle part # 895 201 779 H $43.56 at Genuinevwaudiparts (listed as "resevoir") and Pump Strainer part# 895 201 531 A $53.24 at Genuinevwaudiparts leaving the need for the banjo fitting $10.99 Integrated Engineering and bolt $8.99 also at Integrated Engineering for top of pump and a inline check valve since you will be taking the one off the top of the pump and you can get one of those for cheap. All of that is under $350 and an 040 drop in for the B6 is $390-$400 from any of the popular vendors.

Thanks, David. I just went back and read your "xxx" post all the way through again.

I just put a 040 in my tank with the cradle/strainer that eurocode provides with it. I wonder if I will run into the restriction on the bottom of the pump that Jordan, Charlie and yourself found... ?

We did not have 040s with that problem. It was the "XXX" top secret pump Eurocode sells with numbers grinded off it and sell for like $500+ that was supposed to be better than an 040 but isn't as good as an 044. It is long like an 044 and they cut the bottom threaded part off it like you would do with an 044, the problem was the pump then falls down in to the basket blocking the inlet after it sits in the fuel and loosens up. That is why I said don't grind to much of that ring down on the 044 so it fits tight as hell in to the basket.

Right. I understood the problem, I just never thought to check if the 040 was also long enough to create the same issues before putting it in. Thanks.

040 is completely different on the bottom. And it isn't the length that caused the problem, because the bottom was cut off which gave plenty of room, it was the pump loosening up and sliding down that caused the problem for all of us.
