    Question for fellow Canadian AZ'ers

Planning on taking my S4 to Toronto and I'm wondering if I should use my V1 while driving through Ontario. I know that radar detectors are illegal there, but how is the practice in real life? Does the police there use detector-detectors?

you can drive 120km/hr here...but any higher and you risk a ticket. I wouldn't turn the detector on, nobody uses them here in toronto, and when they used to they were caught with the detection gear.

What ever you do, make sure you're aware of the street racing law: 50km/h (31mph) over limit and your car is inpounded on the spot...

Recent article: Toronto worst speed trap city in NA

As for RDDs, I've heard that the 401 was a testing ground for RDs and RDDs from both sides...

Here are a few stories from 2007...

Same experience for me. 120 km/h on the highway, and you'll be with the flow of traffic (except on the 407, where you'll be granny driving her olds cutlass) and the cops will leave you alone.

My personal recommendation is in line with Lou - leave the detector off. Although I've never experienced it personally, I've heard stories of cops detecting your detector, and they are not very nice if they catch you!

Good luck, and welcome to T.O.

thanks for the scoop! I'll be mostly on the 401, but guess I'll have to switch it off then. Oh well, maybe I'll find a fast convoy along the way.

You may want to leave the detector at home altogether. If you get stopped for another infraction and they see the detector they will confiscate it right away and the fine is pretty huge also.

Well If you want to bring it.... keep an enveloppe adresses in your car with stamps. If you get stopped, just drop the detector in it and close the letter. Opening a letter without a warrant is a federal offense, so they will have to get a court order just to open a letter to check in it. They will probably won't bother for a traffic offense to get a judge to sign a court order over a long W-E just to check t make sure there is nothing wrong with your letter!!

Wow, you guys have it rough up there, although I must admit that I never use my V1 anyway when I drive locally. It would be nice to take it on a long trip though. So if I put it in the trunk before I cross the border, will I be OK? Or can they still fine me?

New speeding laws in B.C. are even tougher. 40kph over the limit and you get a fine, a driving suspension AND your car gets impounded. Think I'm just gonna buy a Corolla

yup. up to 10k for 50 over. most times I have seen the fines being around 2000$ish and car gone for 7 days..then your insurance shy rockets "if" you can get insurance.

19 over - your good, 29 over is 200$ fine, 39 over is 300$ fine or so, then 3/4/5 points. But if your out of country, points/fines 'may' not transfer back to your home state.

No need for a detector. I set my car in cruise at 120 and relax. You can pass cops at that speed and I often do. They don't even look at you at that speed. 135 you will get pulled over for sure. No way in hell would I ever use a detector. The fine is probably in the area of $500. No one uses them.

Ontario has a transfer agreement with all provinces except BC for 407 charges and any traffic related fines.
