broke my axel doing a 5k launch!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I was at work messing around with the guys and they wanted to see how a awd car launchs. I got in the car dropped the clutch and didn't move! I thought i blew the trans but it ended up being my driver side axel that snapped in half. I thought our cars was 60% rear and 40% front. How did the front one snap over the rear? The car doesn't move now but i thought it's kind of odd that the driver side axel dictates all the other axels.

If you lose any axle you will lose power to all wheels. Kinda scary at first lol.

I was like my f**ing fx400 took a shit then i looked under the car and saw my axle was split perfectly in two! Now my car is at work and i was told i am not allowed to work on people's cars anymore because the company is not insured for it. Plus the guys at work are all laughing at me!

The front/rear bias isn't 40/60, it isn't even really 50/50. Our center TORSEN diff works on torque multiplication based on available traction. The front/rear torque split will always reflect the actual traction you have at the front and rear axles. Since our cars are nose-heavy, the torque split will usually be about 55/45 front/rear.

At the moment you drop the clutch the front has more traction due to the weight over the front wheels, so it gets more torque. If your axle would have held together, the weight would transfer rearward, just about the time your passenger's head hits the seat back. As that happens the torsen center diff transfers torque rearward to were the traction is, up to 75% or so to the rear. It is actually doing a live torque bias change *during the launch* - amazing stuff. It is able to do a "pre-emptive" torque transfer before any slip happens. This is why you bought a quattro.

Lol, I just realized I didn't even get to the point I was trying to make.

Anyhow, with 1 axle broken in the front one would think that "all available traction is in the rear" so why won't the torsen transfer it all, or even most? The thing is, it uses torque "multipication". So if more traction is available in the rear, it will take up to 3 times the torque to the front wheels and apply it to the rear. The problem is that with and axle broken ZERO torque is applied to the front axle, so ZERO times 3 is zero. You get no torque applied anywhere.

Basically, when any individual wheel loses traction completely, it acts like an open diff. This is where you need the acronyms to step in and help out. I'm talking about ESP, EDL, ASR, etc.

This has been very educational. I was thinking the worse for a few minutes when it initally happened. I'm just glad it didn't happen at the track.

No, I have CM fx400 w/ 8 puck :) But the rest of the trans/axle.. Can it tolerate a hard launch, like a "drag"? Or is a swap to a 01E trans the best solution?

Nice! Well i know there is some big HP numbers out there on 01A's (mike hood - ringer racing)

I would keep your 01A try and hard launch it. If your clutch will take it, it shouldnt hurt the transmission on any non rediculous HP numbers. And if it does, You know you will need an 01E! hah.

If you want to change out your torsen for the same bias that the RS4 uses, shoot me a PM. I have a Stasis center diff that I'm thinking about selling.

I was at the drag strip yesterday and first 2 times I eased the car into movement but the last 3 times I dropped it at around 5k, car span 4 wheels and took off right away. Using a stage 2 SB clutch. I was concerned of breaking shit but in the thrill of the moment, anything goes.

How you going to say you went to the track and not give any info on how you did? Come on, let us know what your times were
