My hood is EFFED UP!!! Please advise. (Pics)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
It looks like two people put a heavy box on my hood and slid it across to each other for a couple min. It is really unattractive. I can't take it. It's getting worse and worse. It started off in a small area and now it's just spreading around the whole hood as you can see.

Is it the clear coat or the paint? And why did it start doing this? Do I have to get it repainted?

    Thanks

    Phone pics.

It hard to tell from the pictures, but it almost looks like the clear coat is de-laminating. Like Josh said, can you feel it? Or is it under the surface? If it's on the surface you may be able to wet sand and buff the clear back into shape, but if not you are looking at a respray. Audi warranty probably won't cover it, but you may call AOA and see.

Did you buy the car like this, or did it just start doing that? Any resprays or accidents?

they won't. only extended warranty to the surface finish is against rust perforation

    Can you feel it?
It's just really rough, and feels like a shit ton of scratches.

it looks like the hood has been re-painted and it is just a crappy paint job from maaco...
Maybe the previous owner got it repainted or something? I don't know why he would though because the car has a clean record. I'm puzzled.

Did you buy the car like this, or did it just start doing that? Any resprays or accidents?
When I bought the car the paint looked brand new all around. I bought it at an actual Audi dealer with CPO, but it's not valid anymore. This started happening probably about 10k-15k miles ago, and it just keeps getting worse. I haven't gotten anything resprayed and no accidents.

Audi warranty probably won't cover it, but you may call AOA and see.
I should definitely give it a shot.

I'll take pics with a digi cam and post them so you guys can get a cleaner look at it. The top of the trunk is starting to do the same thing, but it's in the beginning stages. Besides that, the sides, roof and rear look pristine.

Nope, it started out as a little spot that looked like scratches and progressed into what you see now.

most likely just the clear coat. give it a good compound and wax it'll be good as new
Any suggestions on a good compound and wax?

^exactly what i thought. how long have you owned your car? knowledge of any possible paintwork?

that sucks man. id try reviving it for a day with some good meguires polish and wax to see what that gets you. hope thats all it is.

if you decide to have it repainted, do alot of searching for a shop and discuss the materials and process with the shop so you know what you are getting. it almost makes no sense to have cheap paintwork done if you intend to keep your car. lots of things, some that look somewhat like this, can happen in a short period of time with cheap paint work.

I've owned it for about 2.5 years and never have I gotten any type of paintwork done.

I will give it a shot.

Not that I know of. I think mine is a little more cloudy/hazy. I tried buffing it out by hand a few weekends ago, I think it just made it worse. I'm going to get the car detail and see if they can get it out or I may just go buy a power buffer. idk yet.

Thought of an idea and need some feedback.

Would it look dumb if I just got the hood vinyl wrapped? rather than going through this process of trying to sand and buff?

I would say thats a repaint with in compatable materials, looks like the clear and the paint are disbonding and the clear is checking, detailing isn't going to solve it, the only way to fix might be a full respray with proper products. You say the boot lid is starting to do the same thing?, then who's to say what other panels are going to do it. You also stated the car had a clean bill of health, with no prior accidents that you know of? When I bought mine it passed with flying colors with no sign of any previous damage but I could tell through experience that the back corner had been resprayed, it wasn't until I removed the tail light that you could see the over spray.

    It looks like a Delorean

But seriously, take it to a body shop...they might be able to spray some clear and buff it out

Yeah the boot lid is starting to do the same thing, but it's in the beginning stages where you can see light scratching, but not nearly as bad as my hood. That's exactly how my hood started out. Maybe my panels will start doing it as well one day, but as of now they are as smooth and shiny as a brand new car.

You also stated the car had a clean bill of health, with no prior accidents that you know of?
According to the carfax it had a clean bill of health. I bought it at an Audi dealer, and since I've bought the car, I haven't been in any accidents.

So do you guys think it would look dumb if I just got it vinyl wrapped instead of getting it repainted?

Just like I said mine didn't have any hits on the carfax either but I know what to look for and it was repainted in the back pass corner, and when I removed the tail light it was evident that it was re sprayed, so it might have been fixed on the side and never reported so it didnt make the carfax. Same might have happened to your, maybe it was vandalized previously and the owner had a " buddy that knows how to paint " and they resprayed in a driveway or something without proper prep and products. I'm just speculating though. Take it to a proper prof. detailer and get their opinion, and then take it to a proper body shop and see what they say.

Its funny how people think that when carfax is clean car was not in any accident. To tell you the truth many salvage cars are in better condition then clean title cars because they have to pass inspection.

I have seen clean title cars in which people have died... they are fixed and sold as "no accident" clean history.

Anyways. Your hood was probably repainted and if that white stuff is on the surface you can try to buff it, if you get some good results but not 100%, wetsand with 2500 grid and buff again. Otherwise hood has to be repainted.

    Good Luck
