Help! Cant fill up with gas!

This happened once before and I figured it was just the stations pump but it happened again just now and I only have a 1/4 tank left.

When I open the gas cap there is a ton or air coming out, hissing like crazy. Then I try to pump gas in it only gets like 10 cents in at a time before it stops as if its full. There is so much air inside that it starts pushing the incoming fuel back out and it drips all over the ground.

What the hell is going on? I kind of need gas for the car to run... Last time I just drove for a day and the next time I filled up it was fine. But now I know its not the pump but the car itself. What could be happening?

Go for a quick drive and turn both directions semi sharply. The evap check valve is stuck closed causing an over-pressure in your tank. That will allow it to fill up. Chances are if you VAG the car and check the engine readiness, it will fail for EVAP right now. It won't produce a CEL though for this because nothing electrical is malfunctioning.

charcoal filter could be clogged or the lever might not be opening the return.

Ive been searching like crazy, I find a number of potential issues but nothing concrete. Where is my evap/carbon canister located? I read that if you unhook the hose and it releases pressure the canister may be clogged.

Ill vag-com the car when I get home to check for codes.

I just noticed I payed for 40 bucks... gave up filling after getting in about 4 dollars. I asked for the rest back and she gave me 44 dollars, hahaha! So not all is lost... hope traffics not bad today, cus I need to get home to vag-com this thing.

happens to me too sometimes, i just change pumps and it usually is fine again

Well I filled up at another station on the way home without incident. Very strange.

I think I'm actually going to sell this car... I had a TT before this one, and never once had any issue whatsoever. I feel like im taking care of a new issue every couple days, it never ends and I have had the car for maybe 4 months. .

Time to get another TT I think...

happens to me every once in a while as well, fills up a couple bucks, then stops, fills up a couple bucks, then stops. its even worse because you cant pump your own gas in oregon and the gas attendant usually dont sit there just helping you, he has to help a shit load of other cars. usually setting the pump handle at a slower fill rate solves the problem. its such a random issue, very very intermittent.

wait so the problem is that so much air comes out of the gas tank that you can't fill up the car? turn the car off and fill it up =)

but in all seriousness this has got to be an evap problem.

Hey guys,
I am having issues filling with gas and I did what Old Guy suggested, and am a little confused.

I took down the canister and I don't see a small hose on the drivers side that old guy mentioned. I also found what I think is blocked....it is between the canister and the vent in the drivers side wheel arch...attached to the canister. Small cylinder as seen below. I cannot blow air through this easily.







Is it possible that this part is bad? Anyone know where I can get it or what it is called?

I am able to blow air through the canister once I have removed that smaller cylinder.

The 8E0201801D is a carbon filter. You can cut the filter open, clean the filter net with carburetor cleaner and glue it back together.
Make sure it's fully sealed before you put it back on car or you'll have CEL for an evap leak. I don't think you will be able to purchase it separately from the whole canister assembly.

AWESOME, had no idea it was possible to clean. I will try this tomorrow! Is this a common failure point? Any idea why I don't see the small tube on the drivers side of the canister you speak of in http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...FCap+Issues+x2 ?

That would be the hose that connects from the canister to the LDP underneath the drivers side rear wheel well. There may be differences between the different model years.
