Ticking noise in 1st, & whining when shifting down into 1st *Video*

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have a ticking/clicking noise when accelerating only in first gear. Then when I am downshifting into first gear, it whines.

-This does not happen in any other gear
-When clutch is in, noise disappears

What's wrong with my transmission, and what the &%* do I have to spend money on now?!

    Video:
(Ticking noise is hard to hear, this is the best audio I can make.

No grinding noises, yet. Just the "clunk" noise that gets faster as the speed increases

I second that. Technically speaking, for you to even put it back in first gear you should be crawling 2 to 12mph? Slap it in neutral and cruise to a stop instead. And the whining you hear is normal since dropping it to a lower gear causes the rpm to spike. Hint: Gear Ratios.
You can never succeed if you are too afraid to fail.

Downshifting to first is for the Video. If it is ever done, it is <5mph. The whining in this video is irregular.

Your first gear and main shaft is damaged (either a chipped teeth or eroded tooth surface).

A new main shaft and first gear run about $1100.00, plus while your in there it would be prudent to replace the 1-2 collar and update the syncros the overhaul kit runs $895.00.

Exactly what I thought, and hoped would not come up.

    So....basically....find a new trans.
    damnit.

How long can I drive on this, and what will happen when it gives - no first gear?

My first gear has been fucked since I bought my car. I had over 20k miles on the trans and it was still fine. Then I tried to replace it and my new one has the same problem.................

To be honest I wouldn't worry about your first gear ever failing catastrophically.

    Well that's good.

Where could I find 'inexpensive' (<$500, if possible) rebuild parts, or a new trans? $1000 for a 100k mile 5-speed is a bit steep, even in the used Audi market.

Oh i thought you had a 6 speed. The 5 speed parts are quite a bit cheaper.. A new main shaft and first gear is about $600-$700. But you can find used trans for that much... Try www.car-part.com

Sticker on car says its a DAJ trans code, but I believe that is the differential...so I can't figure it out
I believe so but the individual gear ratios differ.

I finally got a hold of someone who (seemingly) knew the details about the trans swaps. Says the transmissions are not interchangeable, and I need to stick with the expensive ENP. Damn.

    What is says on Car-Parts.com
M.T., 1.8L, Quattro (code DWR), code ENP
M.T., 1.8L, Quattro (code DWR), code DWR (Cheap)

Trannys ARE interchangeable. I went from ENP to DWR

The ticking noise was confirmed to be first gear. I will tear it apart and post pics soon.

So if you have ticking in 1st, and first only, you probably need a new transmission.

I red lined 1st gear many times while having the clicking noise - it got louder but no mechanical differences after 1k miles of loud ticking.

It's really hard to hear in youtube videos. I would describe it as a baseball card in your spokes, but only in 1st. It would be a consistent ticking that would increase with RPM's, and subside a little bit when at a constant speed.

You said it went away? A chipped gear sound would definitely not! I can imagine that a flush of the tranny fluid might help, but did not in my case.
