    Stassis motorsport failure

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Has anyone experienced a failure with Stassis Motorsport suspension? I came home tonight and decided to adjust my coilover dampening. I set the right canister to my preferred daily driving setting....done. I then proceeded to change the left canister and BAM!! The adjustment knob flies off the canister and hot fluid shoots out all over me, the engine, hood, fenders, etc, etc.
Im supposed to drive down to Miami this weekend for a little R&R. Looks like I need to call Stassis and have them overnight a new coilover/canister. Im PISSED to say the least.

Yea that is how it seems to go with these cars. Trust me I have not driven but probably 2 weeks in the last year.... Long story there. But yea I am sure you will get it back on the road. I would try to figure out if you can source the fluid local and refill and screw the cap back on. Never messed with the canister-type suspension so I am not 100% sure what you could do to temporarily fix it. I am sure someone could chime in!

That sucks.. I bet most people with the expensive suspension setups don't play with them much at all then you go to use it and boom. I'm sure STASIS will take care of you though, I've only heard people raving.

If the broken ER and blown coil are on the same side I would check your control arms. You most likely hit a pothole or something your car didn't like. Bottoming out the coil could have easily ruined both of those things at the right speed. Good luck.

Unfortunatly, there is no "temporary" fix for this, as the shock is under high PSI (anywhere from 125 to 275) from the canister. I am not sure what damper the Stasis kit uses, but it will take special tools to remove the shaft from the body so you can re-fill the damper with fluid once the broken parts are repaired. Once filled you need to know how to bleed the air out of the damper, re-assemble , and you would also need the tool to fill the canister with nitrogen.

TighTT, you said this in your first post " I came home tonight and decided to adjust my coilover dampening. I set the right canister to my preferred daily driving setting...." , were you adjusting can pressure or is the compression dial on the can??

Your actual best best is to find an Ohlins service center in NJ and have them just rebuild it for you... Nothing in the remote reservoir is proprietary to Stasis. They can rebuild and recharge the shocks, and if any parts were lost or broken, should have them in stock.

I have Start-Up Penske's with remote reservoirs and I use Penske Racing in Reading PA for all my service, Even though Startup is defunct, it's a lot faster and better to deal directly with a factory service center, especially for an issue like this... I'm sure Ohlins has the same things.

I would first try... http://www.ohlinsusa.com/us/ .. to see if they have a recomended service near you.

Wow! The adjustment needle probably broke apart inside. You weren't changing the can pressure, just the knob, right? Sorry to hear.

I was adjusting the compression dial on the can and BAM...it flew off, evacuating all the pressurized fluid with it.

I agree - just bring it to a local service center. Dealing with Stasis can be a nightmare. The shocks aren't Stasis - they are just Ohlins that Stasis sells.

Very odd, never seen or heard anything like that happen before. Hopefully you got STaSIS to send out a damper to you ASAP and they will get you credit when you return the defective damper. Got 5-6 years and more then several adjustments on my set, no issues. If you have any issues getting in touch or a response from STaSIS let me know and I'll happily talk directly with folks to help if I can.

Just a quick update for everyone:

Called Stasis and they did not have a replacement in stock (only B7). So I ripped the old shock/canister out and overnighted it to them. They are going to rebuild the whole thing and overnight it back to me for a Saturday install. Not bad.

Things must be improving over there. When they were in Sonoma - I could count on that type of service - as they were local - but when they moved I've had nothing but problems getting issues resolved quickly. They get resolved - but they usually take a LONG time. Glad to hear you're getting good service!

    Good luck!!!

I truly feel sorry for what you are about to endure. Jared @ Stasis wasted 9-10 months "inspecting" my track sports. Not only could he not inspect them himself and sent them to Koni without my knowledge, but either one further damaged the shocks with some nice vice grips on the shafts of both. So, after they were deemed UNWARRANTABLE, I was left to fork over $600 to the guys Performance Shock Inc because Stasis could not rebuild the shocks for me and could not cover them in any sort of warranty. Granted, I've spent quite some coin with them on parts I need not mention, but yes, the "LIFETIME WARRANTY" on the track sports, uhhh guess again.

That was the last time I will ever buy anything from STASiS again.

yeah, when my tracksports blew i just bought new front shocks for the $500 (i got them from koni) and didn't try to deal with them.

they were moving to VA or wherever at the time so that really had an affect on my decision to not rebuild. i still have the old ones, so if i have problems i can have those rebuilt and not have down time.

to the OP, sorry to seem like an ass. i've been there (so to speak at least) but you could be much much worse off.

    UPDATE:
Stasis received the coilover at 10am today and called me at 11:30 to say that the shock has been rebuilt (even though it didn't need it) and has a brand new canister installed. Its being packed and overnighted back to me for install tomorrow. I'm content.

Out of curiosity, I was just wondering how many miles you had on the Ohlins? Glad Stasis is taking care of you. My Motorsports are the best purchase I ever made for my car.

Glad you got taken care of. From what I noticed during the months preceding the move and after the move customer service was slow. Some of it may have just been a lack of staff and moving mayhem, still it's tough to excuse bad service. Since then my dealings have all been positive.

OK let me know on those flares or if you need anything else.

Did they explain potential reasons for the failure? Is there any form of credit being offered on the rebuild/replacement due to a defect?

Seems like your very satisfied with the service which is great. I'm mostly curious as to the cause of failure.

I'm glad you were taken care of and I'm sure Jared has been following this thread. I really don't care to rep them just because they got it right this one time for you. Poor customer service from Stasis is not a new topic and they certainly won't be receiving my business again.
When I decide to upgrade on either car from the Track Sports on my B6 or the Street sports on my B5, or the H&R's on my other B5, it'll probably be to Penske's or Motons. :)

Looks like the Stasis guys did the right thing.

I too have had some recent dealings with Stasis, servicing my Ohlins (tear down rebuild), which went surprisingly smoothly, bearing in mind the shipping cost and time on a 50lb, $4000 package from Cali to the East Coast.

Jared was very responsive, including my recent e-mails with regards to my Project Mu brake pad questions.

The only issue I ran into was during my BBK install, which was resolved after some delay, basically they didn't have the B5 A4 Alcon caliper carriers. Therefore, I swapped my A4 uprights to S4 uprights.

Bottom line is Stasis makes some of the best shit for our cars and it's difficult to deny it. Yes there are other suspension kits, like the Motons or Penske shocks, Brembo, AP racing BBK's, but the Stasis products were specifically design for our cars, our chassis.

I just really hope that Stasis doesn't forget that the B5 platform was their building block of the business at one point. Now it seems like all they're interested in is getting in with dealerships. $.02

I purchased them used with roughly 4K miles on them. Since then, I put another 4K.

OK let me know on those flares or if you need anything else.

By the way if I hadn't said so, that is one hot car, damn!
Thanks Alex. I'll be in touch.
