Winter Tire and Wheel Setup (New Pics, Wheels on Car)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I figured I would share my setup that I got from TireRack today. Bridgestone Blizzak WS60's 235/40 R18's. Motegi Racing MR118 Racing wheels. I will post up more pics once they get installed. So far I really like the wheel choice and I think it will look great with my Ibis. Yes I did get four of them but I got excited opening them and just took pictures of the two I opened. I have to give a thumbs up to TireRack, they provided all center rings, all new lug bolts as well as a lug installation tool.

Looks really good.....very good price too. Nice.

EDIT - Just noticed that you bought the WS60s instead of the LM60 (performance snow). Those tires will be pretty mushy on dry roads this winter. Did you consider the LM60s?

Gotcha, let us know how they drive.

One more thing. Noticed you went with 235/40-18 instead of the stock size of 245/40-18. Any reason you went with a tire that will make your speedo about 2.4% off?

I wanted to go with a narrower tire to get through the snow better. I know the car would have been fine with a 245 but might as well give it even more advantages....I think the speedo might change but I thought that was more due to the sidewall 40 rather than the width of 235.

Also, when is the recommended temp that we should move from our summers to winters. In the early mornings it is getting down around 48 degress but warms up to about mid 50's t high 50's during the day?

235 your speedo will be off by 2%, 225-45-18 your speedo will be off by 1%, much better choice and better in the deep sh$t.

I'm south of you by probably 60-70 miles, and it's often anywhere from 5-10 degrees warmer here (though with lake effect from Lake Erie, it could go either way at any time!). But I'm thinking changing over in the first or second week of November is reasonable. Since my car is still on order, and isn't scheduled to arrive until the week of Thanksgiving, I'm hoping the warmer weather holds out and I can get the car home from the dealer on the summer tires.

But just in case, I ordered winter wheels/tires from Tire Rack, and they just arrived today. They're BBS RGRs, 18x8, offset 35mm, with 235/445R-18 Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3s. I'm aware of the minor speedo error this size will introduce and can live with it. I only unpacked one to see what they look like and get a weight. On a digital bathroom scale measured 43.6lbs (sans wheel bolts). They're going to look great on the car - only another month to wait, but I've been waiting since July 19th so whats another 44 days or so?!!! In the meantime, here are a couple of pics of this wheel/tire combo (BTW, I didn't bother cleaning the wheel to photograph it ** what looks like a scrapes on the wheel's spokes is just a little lubrication residue from the tires being mounted and it wipes right off):

nice setup LYKUNO. I cant wait for the white stuff to start falling just to try the new wheels. Just a quick questions for anyone, why would the width of the tire affect the speedo...not calling anyone out just want to know the reasons

    this might help

    Sidewall Aspect Ratio

Typically following the three digits identifying the tire's Section Width in millimeters is a two-digit number that identifies the tire's profile or aspect ratio.

    P225/50R16 91S

The 50 indicates that this tire size's sidewall height (from rim to tread) is 50% of its section width. The measurement is the tire's section height, and also referred to as the tire's series, profile or aspect ratio. The higher the number, the taller the sidewall; the lower the number, the lower the sidewall. We know that this tire size's section width is 225mm and that its section height is 50% of 225mm. By converting the 225mm to inches (225 / 25.4 = 8.86") and multiplying it by 50% (.50) we confirm that this tire size results in a tire section height of 4.43". If this tire were a P225/70R16 size, our calculation would confirm that the size would result in a section height of 6.20", approximately a 1.8-inch taller sidewall.

I did make the switch but that is only because it is getting cold in the early mornings when I am going to work. I read somewhere that our summer tires's performance will degrade quickly below 45 degrees. Its probably a little premature to put them on but hey I got excited!

I switched as well as summer tires are not recommended under 7 celcius plus my summers were bald in dire need for replacement. Ideally I would normally put the winters on early to mid November. Better safe than sorry.

Good luck on your search. I went with 225-45-18 which are 1% off on the speedo. Some have decided on 235-45-18.

Sidewall is a ratio based on the width.a 40 side wall on a 245 is taller than on a 235

So I was told by one of the places I quoted that 225 is to hard to stretch on the stock 18s. Anyone here agrees?

Yea, I am going 235, I wouldn't try 225 personally. Stretching a winter tire (or just an all season you plan to use in winter) might not be a great idea.

Continental DWS, but they are (supposedly) on national backorder, and it might be 2-3 weeks before they come in

I think I'm going to try 245/40/19 on the stock 19s. This will give me a little less width and some more sidewall. Yeah the speedo will be off a bit but I don't really care too much. Probably go with a Pirelli 240 Sottozero.

Got my VMR V710 GM and Dunlop WinterSport 245/40R18 3Ds yesterday. Does anyone know does the stock 19" wheel center caps fit the VMRs?
