Possible Bottom end leak locations - Suspect Front Crank Oil Leak B6 1.8T - Tool Rent

I didn't change my front main seal when doing my timing belts about 30K ago, and now I have a decent sized oil leak that I having a sneaking hunch on it being from the front crank/main seal.

When I did the timing belt I did the VC Gasket, and the cam timing chain tension gasket, so I don't attribute it to that.

The leak is on the bottom end, I am thinking I can narrow it down to the front main seal, the rear main seal before the tip, and maybe the oil pan gasket.

What are the common areas where seals tend to go? The car has 120K on it now. Between oil consumption and oil leaks I am having to top off with a quart 3K miles into my 5K oil change interval.

If I do have to take the timing belt to get to the front main, is there a source for buying the tools? I used Blauparts and their timing belt tool rental the last time around, but they will only rent it to you with a timing belt kit purchase. I really don't want to purchase a whole new kit with only 30K since the last timing belt job.

I would prefer to get the proper tools and not jury rig the timing belt installation, or removing the old seal and installing/pressing in the new one.

THere is no oil pan gasket..just sealed with audi sealant. Front crank seal is a known place that can leak. you will ahve to take the timing belt off to do it... as well as the timing belt gear. YOu will have to replace the cog bolt when doing that as well.

They make an audi tool to hold the crank in place while breaking the bolt free. you dont need a new timing belt or anything.. just a seal and bolt for timing gear.

I know they make an Audi tool. Not sure if the Blauparts tool kit was Audi, or third party, but it had a bunch of very useful tools. I just don't know where to get my hands on them.

Is there a source to buy the factor tools, or aftermarket tools specifically designed for the 1.8?

don't you need an impact wrench to take it off? i was trying to get the bolt off but it wouldn't budge for the life of me...

you can use an impact to take it off but make sure its a good/strong one. to put it on you need the tool because you can not impact it on. you need to TQ it to spec unless you want to grenade the motor possibly

easiest way is to use a long long breaker bar and the audi specific tool.

Those two codes are related to the transmission.

Looks like you're on the right track with the oil leak. You gotta clean up where ever the oil is and then try and track down where it's starting.
