Will the S5 coupe ditch the v8?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
There was a new article out a year or two ago saying audi was going with the v5 for the s5. It has been done with cabrio, but why not coupe????

The 2011 coupes will get the supercharged V6 that is already being used in the cabriolet and the S4. That means dealers will start getting V6 S5 coupes around July of next year.

the only car with the I5 right now is the TTRS

the S5 Cabriolet has the 3.0T and will continue to have it for the near future

the 2012 Coupe is supposed to get the V6T... The 2011s are already being built... and are V8 cars to the best of my knowledge.

2011's are V8s. afaik no official word on switching for 2012, but it'll probably happen sooner or later.

correct 2011 = v8 , dealer told me they may add ~10-15 hp as well but dealers spew shit often. lighter chasis with the turbo I5 would be perfect!

i have a 2011 s4 with 3.0t. all i gotta say, as a former owner of an s5 with v8, this 3.0t kicks ass on the v8. the car is so responsive with this engine. i have allways been a v8 guy and frowned upon v6, when i test drove the s4 3.0t i was truly in awe!!! if the s5 moves to 3.0t you new buyers will benefit allot. don't believe me? go drive an s4 at a dealer. audi has really earned my respect this time(not that they hadn't before). i feel they have truly made the perfect powertrain combinig v6 3.0t with the dual clutch 7 spd. trans. IT'S AWESOME!!!

Actually I did test drive the new S4 3.0t at a dealer and I was not that impressed. However If the S5 was offered in the V6t I would probably go that route since the performance is nearly identical with a better MPG and ~400hp with ecu update. I wish Audi made this engine as a bi-turbo >:)

I couldn't agree with you more about the V6T. I have a 2010 V8 S5 manual and always thought it was underpowered compared to where it should be. Once I test drove the S4, I became very jealous of that engine. Now with the upgrades available, I can't even begin to imagine how much more fun it will become as it already puts the S5 to shame in the fun category. I'm eagerly awaiting some concrete news on the 2012 S5 to see if they FINALLY remove this over-guzzling, under-powered, sweet-sounding, $50/235miles of boring acceleration, engine for which I had to pay $1,300 in gas guzzler tax to get. Zero to 60 may be the same as a stock S4, but throttle response, low-end, top-end and overall fun with the V6T puts the V8 to shame.

Coming from a 2006 S4, I was caught in the decision between the new S4 and the S5. I remembered reading something that said the 2011 S5's were going to get the S4 6 cylinder, which I was excited about after driving the new S4. To my surprise, Audi kept the v8 for the 2011 coupes, even though the 6 is in the cabrio. I ultimately went with the S5, even though v8 was kept. I love the lines on the S5 coupe, and the v8 does drive really well. Maybe when they put the 6 in the coupe, I will ultimately go to that. Or maybe the quattro concept with the 5 cylinder if they come out with that!!!!

When I bought my cab w/ V6T i thought I was missing out on the V8 action, but after four months...having a blast w/ the supercharged engine...great compromise to gain some extra MPGs

When the S5 V8 is uncorked (Aftermarket exhaust/straight pipes)...nothing Audi replaces that engine with will ever beat that sound. Period.

I won't care about your exhaust sound when I'm 5 car lengths ahead of you ;)

Anyway, just so you guys know what the 3.0T guys have been up to, one member of the S4 community has been getting out there and really putting down some nice times. These are with just Chip + Exhaust + Intake + 100 Octane. VERY solid numbers. He was also putting down 12.8s in a stock car on 93 octane. The 3.0T is EXTREMELY underrated by Audi.

No offense guys, but I find these comparisons are kind of dumb. We all know the strengths and weaknesses of each of these cars. If you all you care about is the quickness, nothing Audi makes is really that good. The new S4 is impressive, and a vast improvement over the last one, but for 50 grand you can be doing 9 sec 1/4 mile passes if that's all you want. These cars are more refined than that, for people who want some style, luxury, reliability, and drivability to go along with their speed... I think they are fantastic DD performance vehicles, and that makes them a very bad choice for track cars. I guess at the end of the day, I don't really care too much about ETs and trap speed - I just want to enjoy the drive home from work!

+1. There are so many other choices if all you are concerned with is speed. The S5 just has a more striking road presence and appeal than the S4. That's why it costs more. I also noticed the difference in build quality between Audi's cars. I'm not sure about the S4, but the pretty loaded up Q5 3.2 I drove (brand new) as a loaner's quality was a couple steps beneath my S5's.

It's not about having the fastest 1/4 mile time, it's about setting decent benchmarks. It's an indication of what kind of power each mod is making we've been able to watch his progress as he went from intake to intake + exhaust to intake + exhaust + ECU. That's all it is, a benchmark. And as a benchmark, a 115hp trap speed is pretty damn solid.

You realize the S4 and S5 are built on the same platform and have the exact same interior right? The S4 build quality isn't inferior to the S5 as you imply. And it costs more because coupes almost ALWAYS go for a premium. Look at the E-class coupe, 335i Coupe etc over the sedan. Even the Accord Coupe costs more than the sedan version. It's doesn't cost more because it "has a more striking road presence", it costs more because they can get away with it in that segment.

All cars riding on the B8 chassis aren't exactly the same build quality wise. I noticed it after getting 2 different brand new Audi loaner cars (one of them being an A4). They're not the same quality wise, as was confirmed by my service advisor (who has been with Audi for years). He even went as far as to say the A5 2.0T wasn't the same as the S5 interior quality wise, and not just because of the different seats/trim pieces. Just because they ride on the same chassis, doesn't mean everything is the same.

And the premium paid for coupes IS because they look better/have more road presence- because they're rarer/required for ROI, and that's why they can/need to charge more (and get away with it), which is what I was alluding to.
