    clutch doesnt disengage..

    after pulling my transmission and putting a new clutch and flywheel i bolted it all back together to find that the clutch does not EVER disengage, even when the pedal is all the way up. throwout bearing wasnt in backwards neither is the clutch or flywheel. the linkage was all correctly put back together. the clutch just wont disengage at any time.


    any advice? or ideas? TIA

    have someone hit the clutch and see if the slave is pushing the rod enough to engage the fork/bearing

    should be adjustable, or maybe bad slave?


    did you mess with anything else while you where in there? seems like you thought of everything already

    started to put the tranny back in then realized the intermediate plate wasnt there. thats about it. gonna try hitting the clutch tomorrow. thanks.

    anyone else have any ideas?

    brain fart. didnt reset the SAC when we put the clutch in.....

    possibility that could be it?

    did you replace the pressure plate?

    you should reset it for a new clutch if you didn't replace it

    and unless you can push the pressure plate with your hands, you'll need a press
    then you can push on the fingers with your hands and rotate the inner assembly

    My money would be on your slave cylinder. Yeah, your SAC could be out of whack but that seems like a long shot as to what's causing your problems.

    but the only reason to reset the SAC on the pressure plate is because your replacing the clutch which (obviously) is thicker then the old one. but if you've replaced the pressure plate, you shouldn't need to do anything

    seems like your problem probably stemmed from what you found on your second reassembly if its not your slave like i mentioned earlier, let us know if it worked out tomorrow

    car drove in fine before we did it. we didnt touch the slave cylinder when we did the work

    You could have knocked it off the shifter fork (or whatever it's called) when you took the tranny apart maybe?

    is there hydraulic pressure going to the slave cylinder? bleed the system to make sure pressure is going to the slave, and ensure the slave is put into the bell housing properly. if there are no issues there you may have to take it apart for further diagnosis

    soo...i havent done clutches before but my tech is telling me that when you get a clutch you shouldnt be able to move the friction disk inside the pp..we were able to...so im thinking VAST sent me a faulty part. or JHM sent me a resurfaced flywheel that has been resurfaced too many times and theres too much space. cause the slave cylinder was fine

    man, take pics and post them. listening to your explanation is like trying to figure out a problem over the phone from a customer. i personally dont see how if you have the pp bolted up properly, the clutch could free spin, and then NOT disengage??? it doesnt make any sense.

    I had sort of the same problem. Used Clutchmasters FX400 and Clutchmasters aluminum flywheel. The wonderful person that sold me the clutch didn't mention that Clutchmasters clutches use a special longer throw out bearing. Chased that one for a little. I doubt this is your issue as you are using an SAC. I am against SAC clutches. But thats just me. No car that comes with a SAC will have one put back in it that I work on. My beater A4 Avant will probably be getting a Clutchmasters clutch as well.

    the clutch wasnt pressed into the pressure plate...we shouldnt have been able to move the friction disk..VAST confirmed it

    just looked at the resurfaced flywheel...the friction area was resurfaced by the mounting shoulder was not

    Correct.

    Sounds like the FW mounting shoulder wasn't lathed down far enough, which caused excess clearance between the friction surfaces.

    Which clutch are you using, and which surface of the clutch can you see with the PP and everything installed?

    the tech had never done an aftermarket clutch. only OEM BMW and Mercedes clutches. so he didnt know. the problem was the clutch wasnt pushed in and we fixed that. it doesnt move anymore. the reason it wouldnt engage was the slave cylinder randomly decided to go bad when we hadn't touched it.

    he didnt know that the clutch disc isnt supposed to flop around like that in the pressure plate?? hrm.. ok.. well hopefully you get it resolved..
