A couple months ago I bought 07 A4 66k clean Carfax. Have been happy but was surprised when at WOT it started billowing white smoke. Also was burning a quart of oil every 500 or so miles. This is my 3rd B7 in 5 years so I know the car and hadn't experienced this before. Of course thought the worse.. turbo. Then PVC, intake manifold, Cam, cam follower... etc. Since I didn't have any of the other symptoms that usually accompany the before mentioned issues, and since I don't have a mechanic who I trust, I kept searching as I wanted to know exactly what the problem was before I brought it to anyone.
Then yesterday I found a site of a turbo refurbisher who had put together this great chart. Each column had a symptom, each row was the fix. The columns were items such as white smoke, black smoke, excessive oil consumption, dentist drill sounds, etc.
Well I went to the row where the white smoke and excessive oil were checked and the solution was..... wait for it.... change air filter.
I went to Autozone and bought filter for $22. Cleaned out air system of some leaves, etc. cleaned pre-filter, etc. Changed filter. Problem gone.

I get the shakes thinking what a field day the stealership would have had with this one.
Fun fact - When I pulled the Percolator filter out of box, I felt good because it had 'made in Germany' printed on it. When I opened the filter box and saw 'made in Austria' next to the imprinted 4 rings on the oem filter, I had to smile.
