Has everyone who has done a DIY starter motor had to grind down the new one to fit?

I would like to try to avoid anymore obstacles when I install a new one. For those that did not grind what brand? Thanks

I had to grind mine down and it was exact same brand as stock. Huge PITA because when the starter motor came out, it literally FELL out, and I could see what angles it took to get the thing outa there (and use those same angles to go in). You don't have to take off much, but you're better off taking off more than you think so you're not going back and forth 4-5 times like I did.

fujii13, did yours come out as one piece or did the solenoid need to be disconnected? I ask because after an hour of finangling I disconnected the solenoid (huge PIA) because I could not find the room to get the starter backed out far enough to drop out. I have B7 and nearly all the info I find about the starter change is from members who have done the fix on B6's. I would think evrything would be identical, no?
