Should I make an offer for the S4 on the lot

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
The 2011 S4 at the dealership is pretty much a perfect spec for me, except for the fact that it doesnt have the upgraded audio. To me the audio sounded very good though in the test drive.....It has 110 miles because people have been test driving it and he said the car has been there for 3 weeks. I test drove it twice and did probably 15 miles each time so it couldnt have been there that long.

But he keeps telling me to do a special order. I think they just have one s4 on the lot. Not sure why...

    In any case,

Invoice is $51,119 (includes destination, and MSRP is $54,400.

How much should I offer as an out the door price, excluding state taxes and fees? And do you think the dealer would rather have people special order a car when it is hard to come across inventory? If so they might not want to cut a deal...

The problem is I cant wait 3 months, i just dont have that patience. And i heard Audi is shut down in December? So were looking at sometime in January at the earliest.

FWIW it says on true price the best local price is $52,619. But what good is that if nobody has any S4's available. Would the price you are able to negotiate for an in stock be better or worse than a special order? Trying to understand the dynamic...

I'd shoot for $500 to $1000 over invoice plus loyalty cash if you qualify.

Same, I would offer $500 over and work from there. I wouldn't go over 800-1K over invoice, but that is me

Yes, that would be the normal plan in a normal economy, but the current economy is anything but normal. The dealership needs to make a quota, and if this S4 sale will help with their quota, then they'll move it. Of course they'll sell it to the highest offer. Make an offer you're comfortable with and see what happens. Also take into account that time is money, so paying a little more may be worth it for you. Good luck!

Place an order and get exactly what you want with fewer miles on the tach and less time on the dealership lot getting "detailed." If you're dead set on getting the one on the lot now, I'm sure they'll throw in the complimentary dealer-installed swirl option.

I believe he is referring to the dealerships doing a shoddy job of "detailing" the paint where instead you end up with swirl marks.

I would go for $500 and get them to throw in Audi Care. Then I would not budge off of $800 over invoice. But before you make an offer, ask them what they can do for you. You do not want to be the first one too offer. If is possible to get $500 and Audicare

That's pretty much what I do. I use edmunds to find out what invoice is on the car I'm looking at and go from there.

The fact that other people have test driven the same car would be the deciding factor to not even think about buying it. Wouldnt want to buy a car that has been test driven and pushed by other people regardless about the whole break in debate.

I personally don't worry about that. 90% of the cars I've bought had 100 miles or more on them and had no issues. The cars I had the most problems with were my 07 335 and 08 M3 which had less than 5 miles on the clock when I bought them. Sounds more like a brand issue! I guess I could just be lucky.

I think I am lucky. My dealer did a great job, no swirl, no marks at all. I had someone ask me what I use to detail my car but I have not detailed it since I got it 6 months ago.

I didn't get the B&O and am completely happy with the sound system. Listened to both B&O and standard sound systems at the dealership. With my ear, the differences were minimal. IMHO, the stock sound system is better than the extra cost Logic 7 system in my previous 335i.

Just tell the salesperson: "I'll give you $500 over the invoice", and then ask him to pull out the invoice for that specific car so everyone is on the up-and-up and you see exactly what number he's using as the baseline. If he won't show you the invoice...find another dealership.

Wish I had that experience. My dealer totally screwed up my paint ( b-black ), just got the car a few weeks ago. I took it in to a NWAS ( for tint and clear bra ) and they showed me where the dealer had used pads that must have had gunk in them that pigtailed my rear trunk lid and left tons of swirl marks. I had NWAS fix the trunk lid. Now the paint on the trunk looks perfect ( no swirls, even under LED ). So now I want to have the whole car done so it has the same finish :(. The dealer has offered to pay for the detail. We will see if they actually pay the full cost. I am going to get it done in a few weeks.

How long has the car been on the lot? That should factor into your negotiation. The longer it's been on the lot, the better deal you'll be able to get. I still wouldn't offer over invoice either.

I wouldn't worry about the miles on the car. When I got mine, it already had 325 miles on it because I am guessing it was the demo S4. If you lease, then you still get 10k, 12k, 15k a year. You could use it as a negotiating point if you really think its worth it to you.

I got mine $250 above invoice in the first month they came out. You'll still probably get hit with dealer fees, which is still pure profit for them.

I bought mines of the lot MSRP $61,075 Fully loaded minus adaptive cruise. It had 99 miles on it and judging how rare these cars are in inventory, typical test drives will put miles on it. I got the BMW conquer rebate of -$1000 and then got another $1500 off after mentioning the miles and that I'd pay cash today. I went to 3 different dealerships and none would budge on the price and all of the dealer allotments were gone for 10's and I had to wait for 11's back in April. All 3 dealerships had S4 each and all had 99 or 105 miles on them. I could probably have gotten a better deal, but why dwell on it. I hate spending any time inside a dealership and the sooner I can get out the better.

I was told there is about 6% profit in the car, and 4% off is a good deal.

Be sure to use the Audi Supplier Discount (6% off MSRP), Audi Loyalty Discount ($1500), and Audi Club North America discount ($500) if you qualify for them. Those drop you below invoice price.
