Did a carbon clean on my 2nd RS4. This one wasn't gummed up nearly as bad but was completely different. While it has @40k miles compared to my last one with 60k+ miles - this carbon was very hard and....carbony. ;) The 60+k mile car, the carbon was a little soft and while there was a LOT more of it, it was easier to remove. I noticed a difference in the upper RPMs for sure - not quite as much difference as the previous car, as expected.

118,033 miles. I have no records from the previous owners or CARFAX report indicating this had ever been done before. I can finally hear some proper induction sounds now...never even know the car had it. The shop I took this to did it with walnut shell.

    Just finished my carbon cleaning.

If i posted pics they would be as bad as some of the worst here. I did a carbon clean at home with a walnut blaster, my shop vac, and a little wood and plate to cover the port. While it was apart I installed the 034 Motorsport aluminum arms. Little did I know that I damaged the rear sensor so after the car was back together I was getting P2020 fault code. So new sensor and she runs great.

By seat of pants it has gained a lot of smooth power. The 5k rush is more pronounced and it revs much quicker.

Now will list it on Bring a Trailer.

Signed up with Flickr, see if this works.

After a tank of gas it runs so much smoother. I let my Audi mechanic son drive it before and after and he said it's like a complete different car.

Just did the first carbon clean to my RS4 at 63k miles. No issues, no CEL, no idle issues. All that said, the intake tract was really clogged up and ugly looking. While the intake was off, I had the plastic linkage replaced with the 034 Motorsports aluminum ones. The car did not seem much different until I got into the higher revs. Worth the $1,000 in my opinion, because I would have had issues down the road.

im in so cal and had my first carbon clean @ about 55k but now I'm at 80K and have the CEL plus the EPC light which I think is due to a flap that is stuck. Anyone know a good place in Inland Empire area I can take it and get it done. Im thinking go doing the flap delete, JHM spacers, Heater bypass, and a JHM tune...any help would be appreciated.

2008 RS4 with 96000 miles. Never been carbon cleaned. Added JHM spacers. It required more manual cleaning then expected. The deposits were spongy in places, and the walnut blast was ineffective.

    Official, RS4 Carbon documentation thread

I’m also posting for the communities benefit as I had mine done around 2 months ago...

If I would have to guess this was the engines first clean at ~71k miles as I can’t find any records for this, the injectors were also changed as there was a bit of carbon build around them and just too risky to keep using given some of the stories of failing injectors.

It wasn’t as bad as I expected although I did use CRC’s intake valve cleaner 4k and 2k before the cleaning.

    2008 R8 4.2L V8 Carbon Cleaning?

Although I'm not a B7 RS4 owner, I was hoping to get some insight in to carbon cleaning my 4.2L V8.
I had my 3.2L V6 A5 engine walnut shell carbon cleaned 2 years ago using the Ford Prefect (Audizine member) carbon cleaning adapter. That job went amazingly fast and efficient using that adapter. I plan to use that adapter to clean my 4.2L V8 as well this spring.
I'd like to confirm if there's a few similarities to the process I had with my 3.2L V6. Namely, when the 3.2L intake manifold was removed, the fuel rail and injectors remained in situ and are not required to be removed as part of the walnut shell media blasting process. Will this also apply to my 4.2L V8 R8? What there similarities/differences between the B7 RS4 4.2L V8 and a 2008 R8 4.2L V8 when it comes to carbon cleaning?

I'm quite certain it's the exact same process. I too grabbed a Ford Prefect adapter and it worked great for me. I can't see why it wouldn't for you.

The BNS motor is known to be rough on injectors, so I would think about changing those on your car also if there's no documentation of them being done. They tend to accumulate carbon on the outlet of the injector and it can even creep into the pintle valve which will hold the injector open slightly. Eventually it can lead to complete injector failure which some guys have attributed to their engine failures.

Past that be careful with intake removal, the RS4 has two actuators that control the intake manifold flaps. They tend to get brittle and crack easily.

I'm sure you will love the car.

Excellent excellent. Thank you. Nice to hear it's not too overly complicated. I've got the part number for the manifold gasket kit but I'm thinking there should be two throttle body gaskets and not one? https://www.ecstuning.com/b-assemble...t/079198074kt/

Service records from Pfaff Tuning show the injectors were replaced. I'd have to confirm when. IIRC, it was 3 or 4 years ago.
Since the manifold will be off, I figured I should probably replace the the PCV / Oil Separator? Did you replace yours during your carbon cleaning?
You wouldn't happen to have a yellow RS4 would you?

That kit that you linked looks like it's for the RS4 and not the R8. The manifolds are different as you know. I don't have much info on the R8 throttle bodies, but the picture in the link looks like the throttle body gasket for the RS4, I'm not sure if they're the same for the R8 or not.

PCV replacement is never a bad idea, at the same time you don't want to throw away money. If you're noticing excessive oil consumption it could point to the oil separator, if you aren't seeing issues with it, your call as to if you want to swap it or not.

I don't have a yellow car, but I know of a couple yellow RS4's around Toronto. One of the guys started an RS4 whatsapp group for Canadian RS4 owners. His car is quite nice. He has a carbon fetish and has alot of really nice pieces.

50k miles worth. All highway driving. Hand cleaned them this time. For some reason the port separators were still in there with the JHM spacers so I pulled them and kept them out. Re-assembled and experienced no noticeable difference with them in or with with them out.

120k miles never been cleaned. Required extra manual cleaning combined with walnut blasting. Deposits were hard and like plastic on valve stems. IMG_5533.jpg
