Torn passenger inner CV boot..suggestions pls.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I recently noticed a slight vibration under acceleration but only when carrying 2 or more passengers, I currently dont feel it its just me in the car. Today I noticed the inner CV boot is torn. Its been may 100-200 miles since I first noticed the vibration (only under acceleration) I'm wondering if I should just replace the boot or the entire axle...Is there a good way to tell if CV has been ruined? I don't want to do the boot only to find I still get a vibration.

Also any recommendation for replacement boots/axles? raxles.com seems to be the preferred for the axle but curious what other have found.

    Thanks

From what I've read aftermarket axles aren't quite as good as the OEM axles (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

Though it is easier to replace the entire axle, it is also much more expensive. A boot kit will run you around $20 or so, while an axle will run around $125ish. I replaced my rear outer CV boot last week and it was a greasy mess and a bit of a pain, but more logical than replacing the entire axle.

dammn i had the same problem with my passenger side cv boot..it tore and it all went down hill from there..you should get a new drive axle because when the boot rips all the junk n dirt that pops up from driving gets in there and corrodes the ball bearings in the axle so they become loose and the axle will go bad anyways..it won't work properly..it cost me a little under $200 for a new drive axle..and its something that you could do yourself so you dont have to worry about labor fees.

Also I believe you have to do the outer boot to do the inner boot just for info.

Yeah I've read post on the AA replacements, they have had mixed reviews on them. Most posts say try to keep the stock if possible. Just not sure how far gone mine is, if a good cleaning, re-grease and boot would do?

raxles.com sell OEM refurbed. that is why they are so good. they dont use anything but what comes out of Germany. I spoke with Marty about this a while back. they have a lifetime warrenty as well. only downfall is they are expensive.

One other question, my upper control arm bushings are bad, would it make sense to do that at the same time while I'm in there?

I had an aftermarket axle go and it took so much other stuff with it, I was out $2500. Broke right at the flange.

    Raxles. Always.

I would. It's actually quite easy to get the suspension assembly out, the time consuming/harder part is getting the bushings tightened after you reinstall it. Just remember to load your suspension before tightening the controls arms so you don't tear the bushings, again.

YES! this thread is a gem! I was just about to post up about mine. My passenger inner boot is torn as well....Haven't noticed any strange noises, but I just noticed that it was torn while under the car a few weeks ago.
Does anyone have a link to where I/we could buy an inner passenger cv boot kit??

Whoa!!?? this just happened to me. did my brakes and noticed my passenger inner CV boot was torn. after some reading about suspension noises here, i also checked my ball joints and they were torn as well. took it to VW dealer and they couldn't unfreeze the tie rods. a few days later my fans quit so i went to the Audi stealer. fans and relays were covered under warranty, but not the tie rods,cv boot, or ball joints. looked over my warranty coverage and found the tie rods and ball joints were covered but not the cv boots. they were trying to say the tie rods and ball joints were corrosion, which i told them so what they are covered, period. they agreed to fix them. cv boots are just wear n tear.

I did a search on here and found the outer boot is a relatively easy repair but could not find a DIY for the inner boot. thought about just replacing the axle, but the techs at both the VW and Audi dealers said that these axles are solid and some of the best around and if i went to AA or another store i could be getting sub-par equipment. these axles are discussed in depth here and other forums and this seems to be true about how good they are.
i paid the audi dealer $200 for the cv boot which he came down from $289 to beat the VW dealer's price, $100 deductible and got $2500 worth of work done ($1600-2 fans and relay; $689 for ball joints; $211 tie rods).

Since our axles are very high quality, recommend having your OEM CV axles rebuilt by your best local axle facility. Recently did this with my front left that was torn/fully leaked for several months. Went to a local shop that works on porsche/audi/bmw and off-road heavy duty. Came back 3hrs later looking new. Should cost you between $70-80. For Denver guys, recommend CVJ Axles or Rocky Mountain Driveline FWIW.
