    Upgrade Time - B6 3.0L to B7 2.0L

I've decided that maybe it's time to trade in my '02 3.0L Auto Quattro for an '06 2.0T Auto Quattro. I've found a nice clean low mileage example but before I fully commit I want to be 100% sure what I'm getting into. With that in mind, are there any major "gotchas" that are gonna make me wish I hadn't bothered...? During the test drive there was a light raspy noise when I accelerate under low revs which disconcerted me a little. Obviously, the salesman said that they all sounded like that, as did his colleague back at the dealership. He said it was the turbo but I can't say any of my previous (non-Audi) turbos souned like that. Is it my over sensitive ears or could there be something wrong...? It has a CPO warranty which eases my mind a little but I'd rather buy a car without potential problems.

Any other advice...? Anything I might miss from my 3.0L...?

One thing I won't miss is not having enough room under the hood to fix to anything...!!!

cam follower would be number one thing to check, check your PCV, check your DV and honestly thats pretty much it. CPO is going to save your life if you ever need it to so thats always awesome to have. car also does idle a bit rough, as for the noice, i cant be positive on it. either way though, if its a good deal then pull the trigger, if there is something wrong with that noise, your CPO will cover it.

To OP.. My friend has a B6 3.0 and hates how its somewhat slow and that there isn't much you can do to them mod wise.. Those 3.0's can sound realllyy nice though. GL on your decision!

2.0T has a few issues but nothing severe enough that I'd shy away from it. Oil consumption, cam follower, PCV and DV are the main culprits. If you keep on top of oil changes and check the cam follower regularly I don't think you'll have any major problems. Plus upgrades on the 2.0 are great, chip and exhaust and you've got nearly another 100hp.

I would do it man! Although, chip and exhaust will net you about 60 hp, not 100. But even at 260 HP, you will be faster than your car now. I don't think I could ever drive a non-turbo vehicle again. Why not go for a 6 spd?

Pretty much what everyone else here said - cam follower, PCV, DV. My car is '08 with 29K miles and the PCV just went. Easy fix though and didn't cause any damage. If you can find a certified pre owned, that's probably worth the $2-3K you'll pay for it. As for the sound, sounds normal to me. I just got mine in April of this year coming out of a W8 Passat. Man, that thing had the best sound and I still miss it. Still getting used to the 2.0T. It alomst sounds like a diesel at idle and low revs. But dam! how about that torque around 2,500 RPM! And I'm not even chipped.

I love it so far and don't have any regretts. If anything, I would have never started reading Audizine 4 hrs a day. I'd remain blissfully unaware of what's going on with my car, secure in the comfort of my CPO warranty and ingorant of the thousands of dollars needed for mods.

    Good luck!

Why would you ever want to drive automatic? I can understand if you have a 7 series or escalade - but for a sport like sedan don't understand why you'd want an auto

Easiest car to drive stick too if you don't know how to drive - taught my gf in about 5 minutes - she only stalled a couple times

Don't forget the carbon buildup issue on these FSI motors.

Thanks for the advice and reassurance... Before I left the UK (exactly a year ago today) I had a Vauxhall Calibra 2.0L Turbo 4x4 http://micksmix.co.uk/calibraturbo.htm which was pushing out 284bhp. I miss it so much and everything else seems sluggish by comparison although the handling was nowhere near as tight as the Audi... "like riding a fat chick on a waterbed" I once heard someone say.

I always disliked automatics but having to change with my right hand instead of the left is like trying to throw a ball left handed... it always feels a bit wrong, and as my commute isn't the best and I'm older and lazier then the auto makes sense. And my wife can't drive a stick, but maybe that's a reason to get one rather than not...

Where's the carbon build up occur...? Is there anything you can do to combat the problem...?

I can understand this, I can't even imagine how many gears I would grind/miss with my left hand shifting. Lol.

Here's everything you need to know and more regarding carbon buildup.

I don't have any personal experience with it, but it seems some have had a pretty hard time.

As far as carbon build up Ive got 140,000 miles on my car and When I took my intake off my valves were clean.... They had a normal amount of buildup..... Ive not had any real problems with the car as far as i dont burn any oil ive never had a cam follower fail (changed my first follower at 114k and STILL had plenty of life left on it.. My PCV blew at exactly 50k but other than that its been a dream.. Oh and I just replaced my driver window reg. all other issues I had were man made..... I also consider my car highly modified maybe not as much as others ive seen but its up there in my opinion...

oh, and vizi, you are definitely safe considering yourself "highly modified". Most of us would kill to have half the mods you have done, although minus the trials and tribulations.

Just done the swap and have been playing spot-the-difference...

On the the new car there's no trip computer, just an mpg display (unless they moved the button on me...?). There are no memory seats, no auto mirror for reversing, no warning triangle in the trunk, no cargo net (but I kept my old one). However, it does have auto headlights and an extra gear... I think it might have bigger rims too...?

The biggest difference is that I now have a car payment for the first time ever...

Yea i'm takinig my baby to the grave with me.. I'm never selling my car ever....... But yea I can't say i've really heard of any 05.5 cars having any real problems especially oil burning or cam followers.... Maybe Audi thought they better get the first production B7 models right the first time and slacked on all later models... I hope not but ya never know!!! Lol
