Black roof wrap (yes I have searched)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've looked at this for a while, I love the idea of a black roof that goes all the way back to the tinted rear glass.

    My questions:

Is it safe for the long haul? As in 5ish years. I've heard/read that it isn't good for the paint for the longevity of it, but I have also heard/read that it makes no difference, and that it peels off and looks like it hasn't been touched. If <- is true, will the roof paint look more vibrant than the rest of the car?

    With my roof

Would it be best to go matte, satin or gloss? I know 3m makes matte and satin, but I don't find a 3m Glossy.

Does anybody have pictures of it on a white a4 with the three finishes?

    Thanks

it is safe to have on car for 5 years, depending on how you maintain the film. After 5 years, remove the film supposedly it can damage the paint after a longer period of time.

I like gloss black for a white car.

I would go satin on your car. If you take damn good care of the roof BEFORE you wrap it, the paint will survive for that long. I would recommend that you have it done twice though, once now and once in about 2 years to avoid any problems. Just do a great wash, clay bar, polishing compound, buff, and wax before you have it wrapped. That will help the paint last longer. Also, keeping the car garaged and under a cover or in shade helps keep the paint fresh as the sun won't bake the paint under the black vinyl.

Thanks for the reply guys. I'm going to be ordering it in roughly 3 weeks, but I want to be sure. I think i'm going to get gloss so it looks like it is paint and a seamless with the glass/sunroof.

    So either Satin or gloss.

I'm leaning towards glossy black, but where is the best place to get gloss vinyl wrap?

I vote for gloss too. Only because when it runs the length of the car it will match the front and rear windows. Thats the whole point right?

I keep debating doing this on my Avant, but am not sure how to get it around/under the rails. I plan to switch out the rails from silver to black at some point soon (just need to find time) and think the black roof would look cool on the Avant, but need to photoshop it first.

Gloss it is. That is enough votes in my book :)

Where is the best place to get it. And I see most places sell 6x4ft sections, is that the right length/width?

Edi: how much wrap do you need for the interior tirm also?

Awesome :D Thanks man, I assume 48" wide is the right width.

Any idea on the carbon fiber wrap for the interior trim? Planning to do that too. I know i'm taking the cheap route with not painting the roof, and getting real carbon fiber, but i'm cheap like that.:p

Everything correct except wax. You wouldnt wax the roof before trying to wrap it, it wouldnt stay on and eventually peel.

My friend who does my tint does this stuff also. He said he'd hook me up for 350. He takes the head liner down and un screws the shark fin so its all perfect. He's anal. I just ordered a glossy black sheet for my roof. Should be here today. Cost me a hundred bucks. See how it comes out...

was the shark fin removal complicated? That's the only thing i haven't really figured out yet. Yours came out looking great btw! You should look into tinting the windows!

Shark fin removal was very difficult, I ended up cutting the wires and removing the shark fin then re-splicing/soldering the wires back together....I have since tinted my car...looks way better now!

not here, but i'll post something if i can find it. I think it was an e46 m3 that was black, but had the following gunmetal painted/matching parts (and no, they were not CF) roof, side mirror housings, wheels, rear diffuser, and trunk lip. I'm pretty sure it was at a show or a meet, but i thought it looked very good.
